Bottom line: If you upgrade from the free version you’re downloading here, to the paid version, you will need to continue paying support fees, or the company will post ads (to renew your support contract) in the dashboard space customarily reserved for important alerts related to the continued operation and security of the blog.
Other than that, the software satisfactorily backs up and restores WordPress sites. If the company moves its notification to the plugins page, where it belongs, or makes it possible to turn off that advertising, I will revise my review.
May I point out that no one yet has responded to the reason this is not a support request but rather a review? I am cautioning potential users about a rather shoddy business practice they will encounter if they download the free plugin, upgrade to the paid version but decide not to pay for continued support and upgrades.
This company has decided it’s OK to invade my WordPress dashboard because I chose not to renew a support contract. Not because I continue to use the free software, where nag screens are accepted practice, but because I purchased the software. It was suggested that I apply to support because the checkbox that makes the nag notice go away for two weeks didn’t work. That isn’t the problem–the nag shouldn’t be there in the first place. And apparently the only way to get rid of it is to uninstall the software…or pay.
I have nothing against the software itself; it works as advertised. And I don’t mind paying to upgrade a good product…when I choose. I object to being treated like a deadbeat if I choose instead to use my purchase without buying additional services. Other companies either make their upgrade/service reminders discreet or allow you to opt out of receiving them. This company doesn’t, and someone who might follow the expected purchase path, from free to paid, should know that.
Dear David,
I posted here for multiple reasons. First, because your free plug-in, which I downloaded here, strongly upsells to the paid version, and in fact is the way I purchased the paid version. Neither that purchase, or the free plugin, warned me that I was in effect purchasing only one year of unencumbered use…unless I wanted my dashboard taken over by your nag messages if I failed to keep up support payments. I do believe that someone using the free version should know about those difficulties so they can make a better-informed download decision, therefore it’s entirely appropriate to post here.Second, your website clearly states that I must have an active support contract to use your support tools–and I no longer have one. If that isn’t true, change your site messaging. If it is, your suggestion isn’t much help.
Third, your site doesn’t appear to have a contact form, phone number, or any other way to reach someone outside of the paid support. The only way I can apparently contact you is to purchase something else…or go back to the place I found your plugin, and try to reach you there…which incidentally appears to have worked.
Emotive? Hmmm…what else would you call having to pay to remove unwanted messages from my legitimately purchased software? It would be lovely to see a bit less defensiveness and a bit more, “Sorry, here is how you turn off those nag screens so that you can continue using, unencumbered, the software you paid for.”
BTW, I first obtained the free plug-in from WordPress.org, then, based on prompting from the free tool, upgraded to the full Updraft Plus package with add-ons.
So yes, this review is relevant to the free plug-in. Users who follow my path should understand that they will be tying themselves to paid upgrades (or nag screens) for as long as they use the tool. That’s fine (and understandable) if it’s free. It’s inappropriate in a paid tool.

In reply to: 2.7 Issues – No Visual Editor & Other ThingsI’m having the same problem as well. Visual editor worked for awhile, the I started a new post and all of a sudden I’ve got p-tags all over the place and the visual/html tabs don’t work.
My hosting service is Dreamhost, if that makes any difference.
Thanks–
