I’m surprised noone comment on this thread, I have the same problem and at least for me metadata is really important since I take great pain to add descriptions to all my photos – and I really want this information to be imported correctly when I upload my images to NextGen…

Ok, I couldn’t let it be so after som not-too-deep tinkering I realized that if I removed the “alt text” the “filename” would reappear.
So, it seems, when I upload an image, that the “alt text” comes from the “description”, and “filename” – in case “alt text” is not null – equals “alt text”.
Solution: I’ll just run a database update query and remove all “alt text” values and hence “filename” will appear again.
(However, if it should be like this is another question I guess)
