Ah, solved it!
For me, it was all about the size of the original images.
I experimented a bit with size:
Original pic: 4288px x 2848px at 300ppi at 4,66Mb in jpg format
Downsizing it to
4000px x 2657px at 300ppi at 1,55Mb in jpg format
and NextGEN gallery created a thumbnail without a problem.I guess that this can be memory related as well, so I recommend you to experiment with resolution and size (in Mb) to something that suits you.
— Edit —
At the size
4288px x 2848px at 300ppi
but downsized to approx 1,7 Mb, the plugin couldn’t manage to create a thumbnail. Perhaps mr. Rabe could give an answer to what affects the creation of thumbnails, resloution or footprint?— End edit —

Well, now I tried a pic with max resolution 4000px, but size was 3,4 Mb, and the plug-in created the thumbnail. So it seems that resolution matters more than size.

Kelly, thanks for the tip.
Unfortunately, that didn’t do it for me. Still not getting thumbnails, even though I only upload one picture at a time. The thumbnails dialog progress bar goes to “100%” and disappears, but the dialog window never goes away.
Any other suggestions?

Yep, same problem here too. Using version 1.8.3 and WP 3.2.1. When adding a gallery, thumbnails won’t be created, and I cannot create new from the “bulk actions” either.
Thanks

In reply to: [Plugin: NextGEN Gallery] Installation problemYep, found the problem. For some reason, my hosting company doesn’t allow the WP database user to add tables by default. Very strange.
So if you use Swedish hosting company Loopia, check your database user’s settings.
