The mailbox does NOT have to be on the same server as WP.
We have successfully tested WPMG with a Google mailbox before, so it does work. It may be a question of getting the Incoming / Outgoing mail server settings right, both in terms of the SSL and Port numbers. You may also need to enable POP / IMAP for your Gmail account. See here:

Did this problem resolve itself with the update to v.1.1 or is it still a problem?
If it is still a problem, could you let me know what language your messages are written in, and what specific characters you use in them, so we can see if that is the issue? I would love to see a sample of a message that is shown on one long line to get a better idea.
