In reply to: Call me a prude, but….I had a look at the site. I didn’t find it so bad. It’s a silhouette after all. In my opinion, it goes over the head of those too immature to understand it. And if they do understand it, well, perhaps it time for a talk!
And btw, I’m a parent of two children, 6 and 8.
I personally would not have such an image on a site like that, but mainly because it’s out of context. There is far more graphic images on television, even during soap operas, and certainly in the evening.
If your child did see the image, and said something about it, I think it’s the perfect opportunity to give your opinion on it, and instill the values you wish your child to have. You can’t shelter your child from everything that’s out there. You can only educate and empower them.
In the end, I personally have little problem with sexual content, as sex is a normal and natural part of our life. Essential in fact! We best learn as much about it as we can. Violence is another matter. I would be very happy if we could eradicate violent images from our mainstream media. But that’s not going to happen, so my own alternative is to educate.
I’m reminded of a song by Suzanne Vega. “I would shelter you and keep you in light. But I can only teach you Night Vision.”

In reply to: Widgets plugin and WordPress somewhat brokenI had this happening to me in one of my many blogs on the same server. All are 2.0.3. I was juggling plugins around on the problem site, and it went away. While it was busted, I noticed i could tab into the field to highlight it and type/paste my content. I’m left thinking it had something to do with another plugin, but I didn’t have the problem long enough to figure it out.

In reply to: RSS Feed: Displaying mix of RSS’sI personally think installing and activating plugins is easier than modifying php files to add an include for a novice. I would also caution that relying on an outside service can have it’s own obvious problems. But hey, he’s got several ways he can do it. He can pick his preference.

In reply to: Please add static pages to the main RSS feed. PlleeeeaassseeeeWhy don’t you just write the page content in a post. It’s really the same thing, except you can stack more than one post in a category. If you *don’t* add another post to that category, it’s really the same as a page.
But there is something else to keep in mind. As that static content gets old, it won’t show up in rss anymore anyway. RSS really wants to show you the newest stuff afterall.
I also believe that static content should not be in an rss feed. I certainly would find it annoying if the feed had stuff in it that never changed. I’m having a hard time understanding why anyone would want static page content in an rss feed. Maybe you can explain a reason I haven’t thought up.
Hey! I don’t wear a beret!
Using someone else’s work isn’t necessarily stealing. I don’t like it when I see those two words married. If I did a news story on doodlebee’s artwork being stolen on the nightly news, I can freely broadcast her work as part of my story. This would be a fair use. Your Katrina photos may qualify as a fair use, but you would need to consult a copyright lawyer, or better, obtain permission and skip the need for a lawyer.
Perhaps the photos you’ve already downloaded are not usable. I would suspect that there are many other photos you could freely use. If you go to the creative commons website, you’ll see links to photo archives where you are given permission to use the photos posted, provided you meet the terms stated. (many versions of terms, non commercial use might be one for example). Flickr is another good source for photos you can use. You generally are required to credit the photo source, which is fairly easy, just a link at the end of the video.
About music. If you use more than 15 seconds (or maybe it’s 30 in the US (I’m not in the US)) of a song, you’re required to obtain permission from the artist. It’s more complicated than that of course, but know that the RIAA bullies people beyond their rights. Don’t believe everything you read about that. There are also many creative commons musical selections to choose from where you can freely use the tunes.
and let’s not forget the wordpress plugin I linked that can do cropping, resizing, flipping etc. free free free! 😉

In reply to: activate users upon admin approvalI would personally get the role manager plugin, create a role even more restricted than a subscriber, and then set new users to that new role.
Then, at your leisure, you can come in, view users, and select all the ones that are newly registered, and change their role in one fell swoop to whatever youw want.
I would consider that less work than forwarding every email, perhaps you feel differently.
The role manager plugin is hugely useful, and worth the download anyway, so I recommend checking it out. You can specifically control the rights of each role.

In reply to: My blog was hacked. How can I beef up security?I always feel it’s important to caution people to not assume wordpress was the way the hacker got in. You could have other issues with your webhosting. And once hacked, you never know what backdoors have been left behind. The hacker may easily come back again. I recommend you either ask to be moved to a new server, or get yourself a new host.

In reply to: How to insert pics in new pagesIf you have can get to the kiwiingenuity/wp-content/uploads folder, your ftp program should have an option for you to change permissions. Look for it in the menu. You likely need to highlight the uploads folder, choose the permissions function from a menu, and then set the appropriate check boxes. Just click on all the ones for ‘write’. If that isn’t successful, ask your webhost what folder permissions need to be for php to be able to be able to create new subdirectories and write files a given directory.
