    Hi Daniel,

I learned WordPress through all of the amazing resources on the internet, and believe it or not, picked up a LOT of information from the WordPress for Dummies book (I highly recommend it). If you want to use the contact form on my website to email me, that would be fine. I’ll do my best to help you, but because every theme is different, it’s hard to answer specific questions without going in and looking at the PHP files.

    Everyone Else,

Hi, I was wondering if anyone else had any comments on my blog design? I wanted it to be interesting and different enough to remember, but I wanted the post area to be very easy to read – so that the content was the main feature. But, now I’m wondering if it’s not a little boring? What do you think? Clean and professional? Or just boring?

    Thanks Snat!

Does anyone else have any feedback? Likes? Dislikes? Bugs?

I recently upgraded, but I used to run my blog on the Poetry theme by Cuikai, and it was not buggy at ALL. In fact, I can’t imagine how I would ever improve it — I was EXTREMELY happy with it, and have the utmost confidence in ANY themes designed by Cuikai.

    http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/poetry

Recently I upgraded to a much more customized look for my blog because I needed more advanced features and because I finally found the time to do the customization I wanted. But, for the months that I used the Poetry theme, I was very happy.

As far as how I created a customized look, I used php and html to edit the theme. If you don’t have a design or programming background, you might just want to search online for tutorials or see if you can find a designer to help you.

Ha Ha! Well, that’s why you shouldn’t post in a forum when you’re half asleep. Here is the link to my site:

    Hi Chrisber,

I love your blog. I think that the design is refreshing, friendly, and easy on the eyes. I also really like your writing and your posts. I think it may be hard to produce large reader numbers without a more focused topic, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who will come back because they’ve enjoyed your blog — really nice work.

My only criticism is the bullet holes. They are fun, and I’m sure that there are a lot of people who will love them. The only reason I don’t like them is because I think they take away a little bit from your content. You content is thoughtful, mature, and interesting. You’ve tackled political topics, personal beliefs, and national crisis in your writing, and you’ve done a great job. When I see the bullet holes, I assume the blog belongs to a high-school kid blogging about video games — if I hadn’t been purposely taking a close look so that I could give a critique, I may have moved on when I saw the bullet-hole roll-overs without giving your strong content the attention it deserves.

One other very small criticism: the roll-over color on your sidebar items is so close to the background color that the words seem to disappear when I roll over them. It might be better if the rollovers were a different color so that the word stands out on a roll-over, instead of blending back into the background.

Sorry for the long post! All in all, a really, really nice blog. I’ll definitely be back to read more (and would be very interested if you end up coming up with some tasty healthy recipes in your new quest to eat healthfully – hopefully you’ll share them with your readers!)

LOVE your site. It’s beautiful, clean, and well-organized. A perfect way to showcase your photography and you work. Wouldn’t change a thing. Fantastic work!

I was actually hoping for some feedback on the new design.

Do you think it’s too much (too intense or distracting?) I think it looks good on my huge screen, but I’m worried that it’s cluttered on a smaller screen.

I’m also worried about the “by Manda Szewczyk” in the orange bar on the left. I know those with lower resolution screens can’t see it – I’m not sure how annoying it is. Should I remove it?

Should I tone the whole thing down?

I wanted to jazz things up with the redesign, but I’m worried I may have gone overboard….

    Hi Martin,

Your site looks great. My ONLY suggestion would be that you show actual shirts (maybe on bodies) instead of illustrations. As a designer who often orders shirts for clients, I can tell you that the way the shirt is cut and fits does matter – and it’s hard to tell how the shirts are cut on your site.

Also, when I clicked on “Click here to view our size chart” on this page: http://www.wormsigntshirts.co.uk/t-shirts/lyrical-lager-t-shirt/ I got a 404 error.

    Overall, awesome work!!

I was wondering how you like the eShop pluggin. Do you feel that it’s working well for you? Would you recommend it for online stores? I’m working on an eCommerce site myself, and was leaning toward using Magento. But, if I can get away with WordPress with the eShop puggin, I’d much prefer that (as I know would my client). Any feedback on your experiences so far would be greatly appreciated!!

It’s BEAUTIFUL!! As are your photos – extremely nice. As a designer, I have only two very minor (and very nit-picky) critiques:

    1. The text size of the content in your footer is extremely small (on my monitor). I had a hard time reading the paragraph about yourself – and my eyes are fine. Maybe make it the same size as the majority of your content instead?

    2. The blue and green in the footer are confusing since the rest of the site is black and white. You may want to either change the black in the main part of the site to the dark blue, and then make all of your links throughout green. OR, you might want to make your footer black. Just for consistency’s sake — so it looks like the website and the footer go together.

Other than these two small things — it looks FANTASTIC!! Great work!

    UPDATE:
I’ve redesigned my header and made some other design updates since my post. I’d love any feedback you have. I’m still working on getting a solid footer in place:

    http://www.creativeopera.com/

I’m especially worried about the “by Manda Szewczyk” part. I realize that those with lower screen resolutions can’t see the entire phrase, and I’m thinking it might be irritating for them. Do you think I should remove it?

Also, I took green2go’s advice and started to use Twitter. I have to say that I LOVE it and it has brought me MANY new readers. I highly recommend it to all of you — so much so that I wrote a blog post giving reasons why ALL designer should use Twitter — and I’m sure it applies to other fields as well.

    Hi rkrieg,

You’ve created a challenge for yourself in that your blog subject isn’t easily searchable. It’s not like you’re blogging about dogs or recipes — those are things that someone will type into Google. It’s also more difficult for you to find your audience. You can’t just look for dog owners or people who like to cook.

LenK is right. It takes a LOT of hard work and time to build traffic. I probably spend more time marketing my blog than I do writing posts. I’m very new, so I’m hoping that will change eventually, but I don’t think that you can build readers without actively going out and looking for them.

I suggest tracking down your market and then trying to connect with them. It sounds like you’re probably looking at the YouTube/MySpace crowd. Post comments, get on forums, and converse with these people. The more they like YOU, the more likely they will be to support your blog. I also highly recommend Twitter. I wrote a post on the advantages of using Twitter for designers, but it sounds like it could be EXTREMELY valuable to you too:

    http://www.creativeopera.com/2009/7-reasons-why-all-designers-should-twitter/

Make friends, talk to people, and encourage them to post to your blog (but not in a salesman-y way).

You’ll also want to make sure the your site is optimized for search engines. I also wrote a post on simple (and free) ways to do that:

    http://www.creativeopera.com/2009/search-engine-optimization/

It sounds like you have a good idea, and I’m sure it will take off. It’s hard because a site like yours depends on reader participation. If you have to, let your friends post some embarrassing stuff about you to get things rolling 🙂 Once people know you’re out there, it will be much easier to get them to come back.

    Good luck!

    Hi Carl!!

I didn’t realize that you had posted a blog for feedback!

It’s hard to give solid feedback because it is still so empty. I know my own blog looked completely different when I first started it up than it does now. At this time, I like your old site much better – but I’m a sucker for images, and the text is easier to read.

I like what you’re doing with the brown paper, but you may want to think of laying another (lighter colored) piece of paper over it. You could make it a smaller piece so you would still see the brown behind it — almost like a frame. If you had a lighter piece on top, you could play more with your text colors. It’s very difficult to find text colors that work on a dark background — and the yellow is a little hard on the eyes. it might work better if you used yellow accents elsewhere and went with good old black, brown, or grey for your text.

Because you are a photographer, I can see why you might have chosen the dark background – I bet it will look beautiful when you post your photos. As it is now, though – with only text – it is a little difficult to read.

You might also want to visually separate your content from your sidebar – a shift in color perhaps? Or a paper overlay on just the content or just the sidebar side? Now, they seem to be running into one another.

I think it’s a fantastic start, and I’d love to look at it again when you have more content – especially once you get your artwork in.

    Love your photography!!

    Hi Rafeya,

It’s EXTREMELY hard to be listed #1 in google. There are companies out there that make millions of dollars helping people to move up higher in the rankings – and even those companies rarely can get the #1 spot. It’s really all about the time and effort you put into your blog. You need a lot of information, and you need information that people care about. You also need time. It looks like your blog is fairly new. It can take a while for Google to find you.

I wrote an article about Search Engine Optimization, and I think you’ll find it helpful:
    http://www.creativeopera.com/2009/search-engine-optimization/

Another few things you might want to consider if you want to grow readership (which in turn will give you links and will give you a higher Google ranking):

    – You may want to go easy on the ads until you have a strong following. There are a LOT on the page, and it draws attention away from your content

    – It’s difficult to tell what your blog is about. You may want to give it a name to let people know what they will be reading about once they arrive

    – Finally, make sure that your content is all within the same subject realm. It’s hard to build an audience if they are reading different types of content every time they visit.

I’m not sure that you’ll ever make it to #1 in Google. Most of us won’t. That spot is usually reserved for the big guys like Amazon and Facebook. But, hopefully my post will help you a bit. Good luck!!

LOL! I’m envious of YOU green2go! I struggle with code, and must surround myself with books and google to create anything new 🙂

Thanks for your feedback on Twitter. Taking your advice, I started an account, and I must say it seems to be helping me to rally page views. As my followers grow, I also feel pressure to constantly post – another daily distraction. But, it’s forced me to be aware and be alert of new content on the web, and I feel like it’s helped me make a stronger connection to the rest of the design community.

I have two more updates on my to-do list: a beautiful (and useful) footer, and some way to make the categories more noticeable. I don’t think people click on them….

Thank you all for your feedback – I welcome more. I’m just starting out, so there is always room for improvement!

    Hi Anton,

I think your site has A LOT of potential!

I also like the simplicity. It is extremely user-friendly.

I would think about changing up the color scheme. As a designer, we are partial to aesthetically pleasing websites, and your colors are a little uncomfortable to look at. I love the orange, but would rethink the other colors. Maybe check out the Kuler color tool: http://kuler.adobe.com/ It has loads of awesome color schemes.

I love how you have set up the categories – very easy to use.

I’m not a big fan of justified type. Especially on the web. It leaves big gaps like on your “Computer Banners” add on the Latest Freelance Jobs page. I’d left-justify instead.

I would also make all of the links so that they open in a new window. If I’m looking for jobs, I’ll probably want to keep coming back to your site. And, it can be hard if I keep losing you every time I click on a link.

Also, just go through and do some design proofing. On the payment page, for example, the spacing is inconsistent, and some titles are underlined and some aren’t.

I think you have a great idea here. Your site is very easy to use – and that’s the most important thing.

    Super work!
