In reply to: 1.5.1.3 – remote code execution 0-DDAAYY exploitAccording to “experts” on the subject this is a PHP issue and not just related to WordPress and has been known for a while:
“The
register_globalsis evil. You shouldn’t have it turned on anyway. Turn it off. Now.”This is also according to PHP and security expert, Chris Shiflett.
To turn it off, add the following line to your
.htaccessfile in your WordPress root directory on your server, if your host server supports the use of php_flags:php_flag register_globals offAnd now it is fixed.

In reply to: Question regarding to image positionYou can also try the helpful information at Using Images.
But to add a shadow to an image is a CSS trick and different from these tricks.
There are many ways of doing this, using CSS filters (don’t always work across all browsers), through the use of borders, or by using a second image put behind the first. It can get complicated.
Since the information you need is widely available on the Internet, and not directly related to WordPress, I recommend you search for “CSS, shadow, image” to find tons of tips that will help you put shadows behind your images.

In reply to: WordPress Forum Volunteers WantedYou know, the most important word being overlooked in ALL of this is the word “VOLUNTEER”.
If you want to help, help.
If you want to get more involved with your helping, then get involved. One way to get more involved is to get more information. To get more information, read the Codex information.
If you want to get even more involved, and particpate more and interact with the names behind the forum to help improve the Forum, and WordPress in general, then sign up for one of the many mailing lists provided for the different areas of WordPress.
Your level of involvement is up to you. You can help by answering questions here in the forum once in a while, or just donate some money to keep WordPress going. Or plunge into the code and risk life and limb as a WordPress hacker or beta tester.
Your level of involvement and contribution does not make anyone better or worse than anyone else. The mailing lists provide information and opportunity to exchange more information and get advice.
If you want to volunteer, volunteer by your choice and to whatever level of volunteer time and energy you want to contribute. It’s your choice. There are no “HAVE TOS” around here. Do what you can and your help is appreciated. That is why it is called “Volunteer”.

In reply to: WordPress Database Backup PluginAnd for those worried about “size issues” 😉 with their backups, with the latest version I was able to gzip over 30 megabytes of WordPress database stuff.
Worked like a charm!
Thanks ringmaster and skippy for this brilliant plugin. Backing up WordPress Database is so darn easy now.

In reply to: Technorati PluginThis is a great plugin but I’m having some troubles. The explanation in the readme and site are not very good and I found solutions to a bunch of the first issues in the comments. Still, I want to get this to work.
The issue is that I don’t use permalinks. In order for this to work, you just have to “UPDATE PERMALINKS”, per instructions, whether you use them or not, and “something” is written to the .htaccess in order for the links in the tags to be directed to a page which will display the posts related to that tag on your site.
When I did the Update with nothing in the permalink fields, the .htaccess (set at 777) did not change. From one of the comments, I followed their tip to set up some form of permalinks and hit Update, which did write to the .htaccess file with changes, and then removed the permalink instructions and click Update again, which SHOULD remove the permalink rewrites but didn’t. I had to manually go in and remove the redirects to posts and pages on my site.
According to the comments and plugin code, it should show the related posts on the archive.php template. I don’t use one so I just copied my index.php and called it archive.php.
So, what is there in the rewrite that has to be there and “work” in order for the technorati tags in this plugin to be able to be clicked and to load a page with the list of posts related to the tag?

In reply to: Structure of a WP site. Am I getting this correctly?Well, let’s see if we can help. It sounds like you jumped into the fray instead of beginning as a “beginner” and then moving through the process. That’s okay. But there are documents to help you through the process, and others who are listening.
For REALLY beginners to this process, start with First Steps With WordPress to get going.
For those in a hurry and eager to get on with it, and a little more familiar with some of the thinking and process behind WordPress, begin with New to WordPress – Where to Start to get a list of the articles and information you need to go through the process step by step.
For a good introduction and overview to the concept of Templates and Template Tags, the powerhouse behind WordPress, see Stepping Into Templates and Stepping Into Template Tags. For a really good overview of the CSS/XHTML structure of typical WordPress Themes and Site, see Site Architecture 1.5.
To help you understand how the Loop works, the engine that runs the process of generating your pages, see The Loop in Action.
And for tutorials on creating various template files, customizing the sidebar, header, and other parts and pieces, and getting your site set up from the ground up, see the tutorial section called WordPress Lessons.
The WordPress Codex welcomes new articles and information and resources, and we have guidelines and policies on how to add that information, help and contribute to the Codex. Please let us know your idea about improving the process of helping users. We’ve recently restructured things to provide an entire section for those who are WordPress for Beginners in the Getting Started with WordPress section. We are always looking for volunteers, so please come join us.

In reply to: WordPress Forum Volunteers WantedYou did a great job. It’s nice to learn about the names behind the names. – sorry, the people behind the names. 😉
And hopefully it will encourage others.

In reply to: WordPress Forum Volunteers WantedOr…you can post a note and introduce yourself. 😉
Explain how you want to help with the forum and what you “specialize” in. This way, if a topic comes up, we’ll know who to turn to for expertise. Or maybe we can interogate you as an expert so we can all learn from you! Who knows?

In reply to: Page as an external link?I’m trying to understand. You want a link to a Page on your WordPress site that takes the user to an external page off your site?
I’m confused, but here is a ton of information on how to put links to Pages, posts, and categories on your WordPress site:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Linking_Posts_Pages_and_CategoriesFor external sites, just use the old fashioned link HTML.
Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Category on seperate pagesThere is a better way, actually. All categories can be displayed individually with little or no effort with the use of the category.php template. You can customize them very easily too.
See: http://codex.wordpress.org/Category_Templates
To see customized categories in action, visit my website at this category to start and click around the different categories to see it change. It is the example used at the bottom of the article in Category Templates using one category.php template file filled with variables to generate a unique category page for each category.

In reply to: Migration from 1.2 to 1.5There are a bunch of changes. In the link above are instructions that take you step by step through the process of changing your style sheet to match the new 1.5 version.
And elsewhere on the WordPress Codex, there are tons of articles to help you layout and design your website if you want to improve it, and help you understand more about how the new version works.

In reply to: Confusion regarding material in phpmyadmin backupYes, this is normal. At 151.6 KB, the size of 2-5 decent images, you got nothing to worry about. My database, in total, adds up to a whole LOT more.
The information you are talking about is normal and does no harm. It is merely “cached” there for faster loading and viewing. The thing you need to “worry” about if size is an issue is the number of comment spam that can accumulate. There is information in this thread http://wordpress.org/support/topic/40263 as well as information on the Backup article on the Codex at http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups that will help.
The key is NOT to backup the stuff you don’t really need like statistics and tables created by plugins unless that information is critical to your blog. Statistics aren’t.

In reply to: Themes with TabsThe WordPress Codex has started adding keyword descriptions to the Themes so users can search for specifics. Not sure if “tabs” are in the specifics yet, but it’s worth a try. The keyword listings are not complete yet, but it’s a good place to start.
