In reply to: Fatal error on upgrade to 2.8.2I’ve only run into this error since 2.8 was released – never got it with 2.7.
Deactivating the plugins worked in the few cases where I got the out of memory error when doing the auto-upgrade.

Try deactivating all of your plugins before you auto-upgrade. It could be a plugin that is triggering that fatal error (I’ve had this happen). If the auto-upgrade is then successful, you know what caused it and can re-activate your plugins pretty quickly.

In reply to: [Plugin: WP-Syntax] Admin/General Settings page issuesThat’s correct, deactivating the Comment Relish plugin was not enough to clear the problem. I had to manually remove that plugin’s options from the database before the General Settings page worked correctly again.
I was using version 1.0 of the plugin – hadn’t upgraded it to the latest version as I wasn’t aware there was a new version until a couple days ago.

I did finally track down the cause of my issue. After reviewing my error logs further, I noticed some database errors that occurred during the upgrade to 2.8. An email to the wp-testers list brought a response back from DD32 to look for a plugin using the cr_ prefix, as that was included in the error messages.
That prefix belongs to the Comment Relish plugin. After deactivating that plugin, deleting it from the server, and manually removing all of its options from the wp_options table via phpMyAdmin, my General Settings page now functions properly.
Not sure why the issue seemed tied to whether the WP-Syntax plugin was active or inactive, but my blog works fine now with it activated.

I’ve checked my error logs and am getting a PHP fatal error for the timezone functionality on the General Settings page with the WP-Syntax plugin enabled:
[13-Jun-2009 06:16:41] PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 7680 bytes) in /home/xxxxxx/public_html/wp-includes/functions.php(3233) : runtime-created function(2) : runtime-created function on line 1
I have reuploaded the files in both the wp-admin and wp-includes folder to be sure that they are all there in case some didn’t get replaced during the upgrade, but the problem persists.
Would love to get this resolved.

In reply to: 2.8 Crashed My Site!!! Using Options theme.Access your server via FTP and go to wp-content/themes/ and rename the folder for your current theme. That will make WordPress automatically revert to using the default theme, as it believes that the other theme is broken.
You should then be able to log into the admin section.

In the meantime, try switching to the default theme to see if the error goes away. If so, then at least your site will be functional until you can resolve the issue.

In reply to: Another 2.8 horror storyI would suggest renaming the plugin folder to the correct name, then go to the Plugins page in the Admin section and deactivate all plugins. Then, one by one, reactivate each plugin and check your site until you find the offending plugin. That way you’ll get most of your site’s functionality back and can notify the offending plugin’s author so that they can fix it.

My plugin removes the Dashboard link on the default WordPress Profile page in the Admin section for Subscribers, and redirects users at the Subscriber level back to the Profile page if they try to manually access the Dashboard by typing in the URL.
What you are trying to is to remove the Dashboard link in the Sidebar Login plugin – my plugin will not do that.
You will have to manually edit the Sidebar Login plugin and remove that link by following my instructions in this comment from my website. This will hide the Dashboard link from the Sidebar Login plugin from everyone except for Admins. If you want it to only be hidden from Subscribers, but show for users from all other roles, then you’ll need to let me know, and I’ll tell you what to change in those instructions to accomplish that.

It’s not innocuous by any means – it’s copyright infringement and content theft, with the sole purpose of making money off other bloggers’ articles, and use WordPress as the platform to do it.
Just read some of the links in the sidebar on the Content Generation Engine website under Current Posts and you can see exactly what these people are all about – link-spamming, link cloaking, etc.
