What version of OS X are you running?
MAMP 2.0.5 (The latest) requires at least Snow Leopard 10.6.6
MAMP 1.9.6.1 requires Mac OS X Tiger, 10.4. It sounds like this is the one you might need.

What we want to do is check to see if the database is still intact, and we’ll work from there. If you’re running Windows with WAMP or XAMPP, you should be able to access phpmyadmin using //localhost/phpmyadmin/
From here, you’ll want to take a look at the database you installed your site to. This is the database name you used during the WordPress installation.
I don’t have access to my DB at the minute, but you’re going to look for a table called WP-Posts (Or something like that.) Look under the “Rows” column and see what number is there. If its 0, there’s a problem.
If you need step by step instructions on how to do this, I’ll be more than happy to help you
