  • Hi Allen,

There are several posts in the forum about this issue. There is some problem, but for almost everyone the fix is simple. In most cases if you deactivate and reactivate GDE, the problem is solved. Some have had to delete and install the plugin again. A couple people still can’t get it to work after doing that, but I don’t have any information yet about why. Waiting on some people to see if they can send me a log file of the problem.

Let me know which category you fall into. πŸ™‚

Edit for clarification: GDE 2.5(.1) is indeed compatible with WordPress 3.5; there’s just a quirk that affects some users with the upgrade/activation.

    Dan,

I’m very interested to see what you accomplish in integrating this plugin with your theme. Fortunately/unfortunately, I have mixed news to report on your request.

In the first place, while I’ve never tried it, I expect it’s possible to control the page changing from outside the viewer frame. Jumping to a specific page is handled by Javascript after that portion of the viewer has loaded. Skipping to page 2, for example, is accomplished by added this onload event to the iframe itself:

    onload="javascript:this.contentWindow.location.hash=':0.page.1';"

(Note that the pages are indexed from 0, so to get to page 6, you’ll have to put page.5 on the end, etc.) You would have to try to fire this behavior using some external link or button instead of the onload event – again I’ve never tried this but it’s somewhat hopeful. πŸ˜‰

As far as counting the number of pages, this is much more difficult, only because the viewer loads the pages one at a time to decrease time to actually display the first page. I’ve written some functions that do provide a page count, but they are costly in that they have to essentially load the entire document first and then count the pages. This can have pretty severe performance disadvantages, especially for longer or larger docs. I would consider this probably not useful at present.

Let me know if you have other ideas/questions, and thanks so much for your positive feedback about the plugin! Looking forward to developing it further. 2.5 was a monumental release so I expect I’ll need a couple maintenance releases to make it rock solid like 2.4.6 was, before starting to add significant new features again.

    Clifford,

Could you resend? I never received it. (checked spam folder also)

    Thanks.

Sorry for the trouble. There seems to be some problem with the upgrade routine that converts 2.4.x settings to the new 2.5 format, but I don’t see the problem on my end so it’s hard to track down. I’m hoping someone who has experienced this problem will be able to send me an error log with the details, or give me access to a test site where it’s occurring to test it out.

I know not everyone has the time or access to invest in that, though. I’m glad the clean install worked for you. πŸ™‚

Note there are a few issues some have seen with WP 3.5 (which this thread says you’re running). I’m currently investigating these. If you run into any more snags, please let me know.

Going back to the previous version is not the best fix for this issue. A few people have reported this on upgrade installs. Have you not been able to solve it with a clean install?

It seems most who have this issue (I haven’t been able to reproduce it) see it fixed just by deactivating and reactivating, but a clean install isn’t a bad idea.

2.5 was a major undertaking, so I’m not surprised that some issues slipped past beta testing… thanks for your patience. Let me know what you find out or if you need any more help.

    Frank999,

You can download 2.4.6 here though 2.5 won’t get fixed if nobody reports a reproducible problem, so I’d be grateful if you’d help me figure out the problem you’re having. GDE 2.5 was tested successfully by hundreds of beta testers before general release, though I know it’s not perfect, the issue you’re having was never reported. You may be able to see your server logs (maybe error_log file in the GDE directory or elsewhere in your control panel, if you have one) what server error was occurring. That would narrow down the issue significantly.

    quintain,

Those shortcodes are not valid. You have a shortcode inside a shortcode, which isn’t likely to work. Although this is not your problem, the force= atrribute was also removed in 2.5 in favor of a global setting on the Advanced tab (if you need it). I’m guessing you want your shortcode to be:

    [gview file=”http://www.floodproblems.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Crichton_2012_flood_plain_speaking_3rd_ed.pdf” save=”1″]

The save="1" is also optional unless you’re using a profile that otherwise doesn’t show the download link.

    Chad,

Thanks for your note. A few others have had that issue as well, though I’ve not been able to reproduce it myself. For some reason the upgrade routine wasn’t able to create the necessary database tables.

I’m glad the issue resolved itself, but if you care to reproduce it and provide a log of the problem, I may be able to improve it in a future version. Thanks.

    Hi Clifford,

The initial activation on a clean install should not use the Enhanced Viewer. The only reason the default profile should be configured to use the Enhanced Viewer is if 1) the default profile (literally, the one named “default”) couldn’t be created for some reason, or 2) you’re upgrading from GDE 2.4.x and you had the Enhanced Viewer set there. If you found this NOT to be the case, I’d be interested in seeing a log of the issue.

The dynamic loading of http/https doesn’t work well in cases where you’re loading outside documents that don’t support SSL. This will need to be more robust in the future. Obviously, if you know you’re pulling from a site without a cert, it’s better just to declare your protocol explicitly rather than dynamically. But hopefully this functionality can still be improved in the future.

    Thanks for your feedback,

    Kevin

Thanks Clifford, I added this note to the FAQ.

Sorry for missing your reply to this message. What string are you using to customize the download link? I assume one of the options you’re using is filename, which GDE isn’t aware of in this case. You will probably want to remove that portion.

Yes, the GDE site is temporarily down while I update all the documentation. Sorry for that inconvenience.

I have planned to support the title attribute in the next version after 2.5. The changes in 2.5 are extensive and I am hesitant to add anything else at this point that would extend the beta cycle. But be assured this is already on my list. πŸ™‚ Thanks.

    Hi Clifford,

This is an easy fix on my part and I will be sure to add it to the final GDE 2.5 release (hopefully this week). In the meantime you can bypass this by turning off GDE’s error checking. The method for doing so varies by version (2.4.x or 2.5) but in general look for “advanced” options and you’ll find it there. Let me know if you need more help.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

    Kevin

It’s fine and normal to host your files on the same server as WordPress. So that’s not an issue.

“Took too long” could be the result of several things – the server you’re hosting on is slow, underpowered, or over-shared, making Google’s request for the document laggy. A network issue (perhaps temporary) has caused a delay between your server and Google. Or, your source document is too large/not web optimized.

    Hope this helps.

This is still a problem, but I understood Andrew’s answer to say that the issue is with TinyMCE, not with WordPress. So in that sense I would call it resolved… πŸ™‚

Thanks all for your great work.
