Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: 3.2.1. BugsSo in case anyone finds this post because 3.2.1 is a crappy upgrade and it screwed up their interface functionality… the problem is that a lot of web hosting providers, in my case HostGator, are running PHP 5.2 and haven’t upgraded all their servers to anything beyond that yet.
As my web host can’t or won’t upgrade me immediately to PHP 5.3 and I need to get this monkey of my back right away, I’ve downgraded back to 3.1.4. Check http://wordpress.org/support/topic/is-rollback-to-314-possible?replies=9 for how to do that.
My recommendation: just because WordPress releases an upgrade and wants you to implement it doesn’t mean you should. If your blog is administered by a non-techie as in our case, definitely don’t upgrade unless you’ve tested the new version on a clone of your site. In fact, I would suggest not ever upgrading unless you begin having problems or at least don’t upgrade until a month or two after an upgrade is released. WordPress is apparently an open source project managed and developed largely by volunteers and not necessarily people who care about the needs of professional users. Treat all new releases as unsafe until you know with 100% certainty that your server and OS meet all requirements for the new version.

In reply to: Bug in 3.2.1, admin drop down menus disabled agaaaaaindude, fonglh. I’m no open source noob. don’t be so condescending. I am fairly new to WP and didn’t realize it was an open source project. that does explain a lot.
you’re actually wrong about people owing me money. I know several people who owe me money but of course my comment was just a way of venting my frustration at having to switch gears from real work to problem solve something that worked just fine a month ago and doesn’t work now after an upgrade. But thanks for your comment.
To all you volunteers and college students: some of us, many of us, maybe most of us who use this software, are not doing it as an intellectual exercise or because we’re supervising the computer lab and we’re bored. We’re doing it because it’s part of our jobs. We don’t need cutesiness or snarkiness. Speaking for myself, that just makes me want to hack your kernels and screw with your version dependencies.
the problem is a server side problem and I’ve already resolved it, fonglh dude. thanks anyway. btw, I had tried all your suggestions before I came on here looking for other ideas. so in hindsight maybe I will keep “check forums” at the bottom of my problem-solving grid for WordPress…

In reply to: Bug in 3.2.1, admin drop down menus disabled agaaaaainspent some time online with our HostGator techs. They run PHP 5.2 by default. not sure if 5.2.4 has critical modifications that WP 3.2.1 needs. trying to get them to upgrade us to 5.3…

In reply to: Bug in 3.2.1, admin drop down menus disabled agaaaaainJust found this post. I’m having the same issues. I didn’t notice immediately because we run a photo blog and only post once or twice a month. At first I assumed it was a user error on the part of our blog manager. I jumped through all the usual hoops (browser upgrades, etc) and still haven’t resolved it. I’m pretty sure this is a WP problem. I’m a little surprised. For as widely-used as WP is, you’d think they’d be on top of these issues with a little more alacrity. I manage several aspects of our online presence and this is the sort of thing you’d expect from a platform developed and managed part-time by a college student.
Seriously. Could you please fix this right away? I just wasted three hours on this. I won’t tell you what I bill out at but you owe us some bucks. My takeaway: Put “Check forums” at the top of my problem solving procedure, not the bottom.
