In reply to: Can’t Make New Static PagesI’ve done it!!!!!
Somewhere along the line I think I missed the point of what to do so forgive me for getting myself so confused!
Anyway, here’s an idiots guide for those of you having problems with .htaccess
– Create your Page
– Before you view it, go to the options > permalinks page and copy and paste the NEW code for your .htaccess page (which was generated when you created the page)
– Upload your new .htaccess file to your server
– Go back to the Pages section and click view – voila!My problem was that whenever it didn’t work, I promptly deleted the Page in case it screwed everything up – so updating the htaccess made no difference because there was no Page in the database!!
Moshu, thanks for your patience – I got there in the end!
Now, if I can just figure out how to delete the option to paste comments on Pages…

In reply to: Can’t Make New Static PagesI have done – several times but it still won’t let me view Pages.
Just out of curiosity, why are Pages linked to permalinks?

In reply to: Can’t Make New Static PagesI get your point that WP is meant to write my.htaccess file for me but that fact is that it never has.
When I did my permalinks I had to do it myself using the code provided by WP.
So based on that experience, I was assuming that if WP didn’t write your htaccess for you, then there was a code you could put in it yourself.
I’ve tried chmoding .htaccess to 66
I’ve tried deleting it and starting over.
I’ve been trying that for days – hence my first post on this topic asking how to do it myself.

In reply to: Can’t Make New Static PagesMoshu, for some reason, WP 1.5.1.1 won’t do my .htaccess files so I need to do it myself, which is a bit of a problem as I don’t know how!
I use the “nice permalinks” (and have no desire to lose them), so when you say “The Page’s slug (“mypage” above) has to be written in the .htaccess”, what do you mean? What do I write? Can someone who can make Pages copy and paste it here please? I am well and truly stuck!
Thanks, Jo

In reply to: Can’t Make New Static PagesIs there any additional code that needs to go into the .htaccess file to enable you to create static pages?
Every time I create a new Page, WP tells me it’s been created, but when I click “view page” I go straight to a 404 page – I understand that I need to update the htaccess but I don’t know what goes in it. That’s where I’m stuck. This version of WP has never done my htaccess files for me.

In reply to: Changing page names from “page_id=..” to page nameHi mustardnut,
I had real difficulties with .htaccess in WP1.5.1.1 so ended up doing it slightly differently:
http://wordpress.org/support/topic/34940
I finally managed to fix it by downloading some software called HTAccessible which you can get from http://www.tlhouse.co.uk/HTAccessible.shtml
What you do is create a .htaccess file using the software and upload it to your server.
Then update your permalinks in WP-Admin, copy and paste the code it generates into the .htaccess file you’ve just generated and upload it again.
It should then work.
You can also make your own 404 error pages using the software.

In reply to: WP theme: Flex won’t display bulletOk, by using this code in Flex (it works fine in the other themes) I’ve managed to get square bullets right on the left of the main content:
#maincol ul {
font-weight: none;
margin: 0;
padding-left: 12px;
}#maincol ul li {
list-style:square;
}#maincol ul li ul li {
list-style:square;
}#maincol ul li ul li {
list-style:circle;
}How do I get it to indent a bit, and how can I change it into “normal” shaped bullets?
But thanks for the help so far!

In reply to: Can’t Make New Static Pagesmacmanx, I did a few weeks ago when I was having trouble with permalinks (which I eventually sorted) but I still can’t make new pages. It just goes straight to my 404 page (like thepete)
Not sure what the problem is or where to start.
Is there a special code that goes in the .htaccess file?

In reply to: Can’t Make New Static PagesHi, I’m having a similar problem – using WP 1.5.1.1 I can create new pages (called anything I like) but when I try to view them they don’t exist.
I suspect it’s the .htaccess file but I don’t know what to put in it to correct the problem
