In reply to: General advice needed on inherited WP websiteHi @varjik
Thanks for reply and the very helpful advice. I hadn’t thought of installing a new WP and then re-installing the other stuff. That sounds like the best way to go.
The old theme is very convoluted and uses so many plugins that I can’t see are necessary. I certainly don’t trust any theme that hasn’t been updated in 4 years. Or one that still uses WP 3.8.
Much appreciated! Thanks again.

In reply to: General advice needed on inherited WP websiteThanks for reply. What I have done is set up a staging site and have started updating bit by bit. The plugins went OK – the problem is going to be with the themes and WP core – am hoping to talk the client into letting me use a different theme then I can just copy the content from the old site.
Thanks for reading.Yes I’ve always found UpdraftPlus to be great for all my sites.
Thanks for reply.I would like to scrub the lot and start again. Unfortunately my client likes the theme he has on the site, a theme that was designed and supplied by his previous hosting company. I did another site for him years ago and he wanted me to host this current site. I did point out that he may no longer have access to theme updates but apparently he likes it. It appears really complex to me and I really don’t know what all the plugins do but 23 of them were/are out of date when the site was handed over a few days ago which I thought a bit peculiar.
Apparently sql WAS a problem the first time they transferred the site from the link provided by the previous company – which incidentally was flagged as containing a trojan by Avast – at least they told me that the MySQL extension was missing. Also on the first time round I installed Wordfence and it reported 2 malicious files found!
If it wasn’t for the fact that the client is a client of long standing, I wouldn’t have agreed to host the site. I might move it to a different server so my other sites are not compromised.
Thanks for reply!

Yes it was. I had just had it restored. I’ve never had an issue with UpdraftPlus before either. I suspect it is to do with the vast array of plugins on this site I have inherited. Some of them I have never even heard of. Just hoping my host can help me out with this.
Thanks for reply.Forum: Fixing WordPress

In reply to: Google result highlights Skip linkThank you for reply Tor – I have never heard of an excerpt for each page being deliberately specified. Do you mean by utilising an application such as Yoast?
I hadn’t thought of using it for this site as it is a very small site, virtually only one page but perhaps I will now. Thanks.Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: 2 Admins get 2 different editing resultsYes both are actually Admins. It is very strange. Thanks Airster, I will do what you suggest tomorrow.

In reply to: Restricting Page Atribute listsThanks Michael – that worked!
I wonder if something similar could be applied to widgets? For example, left-sidebar widgets that don’t need to be edited anymore; what sort of hook could be applied to them to remove them from the drop-down list of widgets.Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Restricting Page Atribute listsAt the moment they are organized in quarterly groups:
Page title: Stories Jan-Mar 2016 with say 20 individual pages with Stories Jan-Mar 2016 as the Parent.
Then another page: Stories Apr-May 2016 with all its individual pages.
And so on.
There is really nothing to distinguish them from any other page on the site.
These pages do not need any more editing as they are just stored on the site in case someone wants to see them.
ThanksForum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Restricting Page Atribute listsThank you Michael
I am not very technical but assume ( 2, 723, 2059) are page ID’s?
Yes I can try that.Where you mention _archival_ pages: currently these pages are just ordinary pages – what does “archival” mean in this context?
Thank you!

In reply to: [UpdraftPlus: WP Backup & Migration Plugin] Where to place cron job codeThanks DNutbourne
I may have jumped the gun here. As you can tell I am not all that conversant with php. When I disabled the WP cronjob I replaced it with a Real cronjob. I have since realised that the UpdraftPlus backups are indeed working so I imagine that the Real cronjob is doing the same thing as the WP one.Forum: Plugins
In reply to: [Contact Form 7] How to show sender’s email in outputThat was a long time ago! I think what I wanted was a widget like a form with the field titles already filled in.
For a widget you can edit: WP Editor Widget: WP Editor Widget- This reply was modified 9 years, 7 months ago by Jasnick.

In reply to: [Contact Form 7] How to show sender’s email in outputHi Blake
Are you talking about another post? This post is resolved.
If you are looking for a plugin to be able to edit a widget, I always use the WP Editor Widget which shows up in the Widgets list as Rich text. You can then treat the widget like a doc and do whatever you want with it.Forum: Plugins
In reply to: [Contact Form 7] How to show sender’s email in outputI’d forgotten to add it to the Mail section!
