Ok, I was able to convert my theme menu list (using the url method) to a dropdown select type menu using this technique: http://css-tricks.com/convert-menu-to-dropdown/ (using jQuery). See the footer of http://cyberkitty.net.
I am still interested in understanding how I would use the esw_set_theme function though. Can this be done without jQuery?
