Everything now sorted! I restored the files using the history tab on godaddy as suggested, made a backup & then deactivated all of the plugins before I reinstalled 3.4.2.

Thanks to all for the prompt responses, much appreciated. Apologies for the ignorance on my part when making updates, will certainly learn from this one.

Thanks so much for the responses.

    Hi Esmi.
I tried option 1 & that didnt work so I proceeded to try re-uploading all of the files & folders except the wp-content folder & unfortunately the problem seems to have got a lot worse as i cant even access the site now & get this error message:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end, expecting T_FUNCTION in /home/content/47/7399747/html/caterpods/wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 1238

I contacted godaddy who said my php needed to be upgraded to version 5.3 which I have now done, although the problem still remains. I am asking godaddy if they can just reinstall my files from the version earlier in the week & they are yet to reply / agree. If I am unable to do this do you have any ideas?
    Thanks
