Support » Fixing WordPress » Upgrade to version 3.4.2 and cannot access dashboard

  • Resolved James Plane

So I was in my dashboard yesterday & hit a button requesting an upgrade to 3.4.2 (instead of waiting for notification from godaddy which I usually do) – since then I have been unable to access the dashboard of the site even though it would appear that I am logged in (to log in I go via my normal route The error message I get is “Oops…, I cannot find that page you are looking for, sorry… (Error 404)” and it takes me to a url which is “”

I have searched the forums trying a couple of ways to fix (for example changing the file name of my theme in my FTP to force it to use twenty ten / twenty eleven + I have also downloaded wordpress 3.4.2 to my pc & then deleted all of the current files in the FTP excluding wp-config.php & wp-content & re-loaded wordpress) all to no avail.

My tech experience is pretty limited so if anyone can offer assistance it would be greatly appreciated.

  • Try to login again:

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme by renaming your current theme’s folder inside wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php

Thanks so much for the responses.

    Hi Esmi.
I tried option 1 & that didnt work so I proceeded to try re-uploading all of the files & folders except the wp-content folder & unfortunately the problem seems to have got a lot worse as i cant even access the site now & get this error message:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end, expecting T_FUNCTION in /home/content/47/7399747/html/caterpods/wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 1238

I contacted godaddy who said my php needed to be upgraded to version 5.3 which I have now done, although the problem still remains. I am asking godaddy if they can just reinstall my files from the version earlier in the week & they are yet to reply / agree. If I am unable to do this do you have any ideas?

You can restore your own files on GoDaddy from your history tab in the file manager

Sounds like you still have corrupted files. Did you re-upload using a fresh copy of WordPress? Did you delete the old files & folder before re-uploading the new ones? If the answer to either question is “No”, try again with a fresh copy.

Everything now sorted! I restored the files using the history tab on godaddy as suggested, made a backup & then deactivated all of the plugins before I reinstalled 3.4.2.

Thanks to all for the prompt responses, much appreciated. Apologies for the ignorance on my part when making updates, will certainly learn from this one.
