In reply to: Best practice for changing the file name of an image?changing filenames is a manual and problematic process. You should simply consider preventing hotlinking.

google *will* respect your robots.txt if you give it time. Case in point: ever seen a flickr image on google? they even have a form you can use to remove links from their index.
google it 😉

In reply to: wp 2.5.1 and caching — how is wp 2.5.x managing it?you know, usually I’m a quick study, but for some reason I keep getting stung by this.
I thoroughly apologise to you, whooami, for ever taking exception to anything you’ve ever said… I can’t really remember what it was that made us collide once or twice, but whatever it was, I’m now thoroughly convinced yours was the sane voice in that.
back in the early 90s I did the IRC help channel thing. I cut my teeth on that, and on forums for the better part of a decade, until finally taking a 6-year sanity break.
I’m actually really disheartened that nothing’s changed.
edit: jdembowski, you’re a better person than I am.

In reply to: wp 2.5.1 and caching — how is wp 2.5.x managing it?Hellooo dahlink.
I dunno about anyone else but this line stood out to me.
“I do not have the leisure to read (and understand) other people’s php code for free.”
And yet you expect others to not only give you their code for free, but also explain it, for free.
Why the flying firetruck do so many people feel the world owes them an answer? Where does that rancid attitude come from?

why you would do that is beyond me… lets hope someone else sees your thread when you’ve turned your site back on.

In reply to: Question on adapting site to WordPressI may be missing something, but I think wordpress already does everything you want out of the box.
the dynamically generated indexes you speak of, are nothing more than archive pages – on which you can choose what information is available.
every wordpress “view” (I’ll call it a view, to differentiate between pages) can be output in any way you like, either as a full post, which you’re accustomed to, or any part thereof.
So it’s insanely easy to make lists of your content sorted in any way you like, and filtered in any way you want. Moreover
if you’ve looked at even the default theme, you’ll notice that the main content appears before any sidebar garbage, so your source-ordered stuff is as you like it.
I’m just not sure what exactly you want ‘handled’.
I would never suggest that someone as serious about their web project as yourself should pick an off-the-shelf theme and stick to it, so beyond the basic framework of what’s offered by wordpress, I’d suggest you get your hands dirty customising any theme you start off with, to your own liking.
That’s often as simple as cutting and pasting some stuff around.

In reply to: Creating a Themes Websiteunless you’re expecting for someone to spend the next 3 months of their life tied to a 420 page thread talking you through the whole thing, perhaps you can think of a more specific question to ask?
then:
1) ask google for a plugin
2) ask the search here
3) ask google again, but with better keywords
4) come post about it here if none of that helps. The secret to getting great support is knowing how to ask an excellent question.
Before you get too upset, allow for the possibility that while I may not have answered your current question, I might have helped you with every question you’ll ever have from now on.
