I’m aware of WPMU but I am always hesitant with development branches. Also, some of the plugins I am interested in can cause problems with WPMU.
I may be forced into that route but I would rather find a solution that will allow me to continue using Stand Alone WP.

Wouldn’t a mod-rewrite in the .htaccess file on the sub-domain work just as well?
