Multiple WP Blogs using one /wp-content directory

  • Hi,

    I have a domain (www.domain.com) with a number of sub-domains:

    abc.domain.com
    def.domain.com
    xyz.domain.com

    I would like to run separate WP blogs on each sub-domain, can I do this with one /wp-content directory located on http://www.domain.com (and use .htaccess rewrites on each sub-domain) so I only have to upload plugins and themes to one central location?

    Is there a better way of doing this?

  • You could setup a symlink from to the other wp-content folder. See http://www.hmug.org/man/1/ln.php

    You’ll need SSH or Telnet access for this…

    Example:
    ln -s ./wp-content ../otherblog/wp-content

    If you don’t have SSH or Telnet access, you can also try to create a php script, upload it to one WordPress root and open it in your browser:

    <?php
    exec("ln -s ./wp-content ../otherblog/wp-content");
    ?>

    Arnee,

    Thanks for that, I’ll give it a try.
    Wouldn’t a mod-rewrite in the .htaccess file on the sub-domain work just as well?

    go check out WPMU – WordPress Muli User at http://mu.wordpress.org there’s also a separate forum with answers to all your questions and more!! Remember that it is still under development though!!

    mickemus,

    I’m aware of WPMU but I am always hesitant with development branches. Also, some of the plugins I am interested in can cause problems with WPMU.
    I may be forced into that route but I would rather find a solution that will allow me to continue using Stand Alone WP.
