Thanks for the reply. I also got in touch with my hosting provider and it looks like they have solved the issue.
My apologies. It turns out that the issue was not related to the theme at all.
It was caused by an entirely different plugin trying to generate excepts.

The theme is unmodified and we noticed the double text shortly after upgrading to version 1.2.1 of the theme.

I’ve just checked again and am seeing the same issue.

I have left the default for all other options.
I am running WordPress 3.5
