I downloaded the plugin and installed and wanted to see what happens.
The problem is I don’t have a Flattr account.

Then users told me the link from my tweet didn’t work.
I checked my Twitter timeline and clicked the link. Worked for me, could be why you don’t get the problem.
Only other people get the 404 error.
So you can test by making a post, tweet with your button. Then tweet to your users to see if the link worked.

I hear you. Past postings re-naming or moving the gallery path has lead to problems and complications.
Hopefully you can bounce back.
Well you’re only gonna have images there, but at the end of the day if someone wants to hack you and has the abilities directory re-naming may not pose a problem.

Sadly I think I read they removed the compatibility check, which I think is a bad idea.
Very useful feature because it would at least report a problem.
You may want to check if you’re theme has the following :
<?php wp_head(); ?>
<?php wp_footer() ?>;
You can check by clicking
Appearance-> Editor in your admin bar.
Click Header and then after the Footer on the right hand side of your screen.
<?php wp_head(); ?> right before </head>
<?php wp_footer(); ?> right before </body>
Add them if they are missing and click Update file after you edit each before moving on the the next.

Try deactivating WP Better Security.
Are you on GoDaddy or other big name hosting site ?
If so you should have a control panel feature.
Make a new directory wp-content in the root of your WordPress installation. Inside there make another gallery directory.
Make sure directory names are lowercase. I believe WordPress is case sensitive.
Then you should be able to select the old gallery from the newly renamed directory and move it to the original location.
Then reactive the WP Better Security.

I just went to your site, I wasn’t redirected and the Recipes link worked too.
Did you change something ?
I use:
NextGEN Gallery Search
But it only works for pre 2.x versions.
I can’t live without it on my site.
Let’s you search the Album names not image names.
I constantly update my site and galleries.
Dunno why it breaks for the 2.x version. I doubt it’ll ever get updated.
Hopefully Photocrati implements a similar feature.

I think it’s a permissions problem. (I could be wrong).

You’ll need to set the permissions of /wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery to the 755 via FTP.

OK I’m slightly confused.
Please let us know which version of WordPress and NextGen Gallery you’re using.
I think what you’re saying is when you upload images you get a white page ?
Or do you see a white page when you goto your website ?
Please provide your website’s URL.
You might have to check your parameters.
