Well it is part of WordPress core functions ( adjacent_posts_rel_link_wp_head ) and is used by Firefox for prefetch as well as for certain plugins for mobile gesture support (swipe next and previous post).
But yes I see that behavior conflicts with multipage post support.
I’ll find another way to restore the function. Thanks.
Thanks marcanor. The problem is not with pagination but with next and previous rel links to the next and previous posts which WordPress normally produces on posts.
It is not theme related. I tested it by switching to the Twentyseventeen and the behavior is just the same.
Without Yoast SEO I have these tags in the header

I found what I think is the problem. I use the Disqus plugin and saw in the source code of my admin panel this script added by Disqus.

</script>This script was not present in the other blog I installed the Like button plugin on.
When I deactivated Disqus the tabs worked.
But I need Disqus
I have just installed the plugin for the first time. Sorry for cross posting but didn’y get any response on Facebook, Twitter or the bug reporting.
Installed the plugin for the very first time 4.4.1 with WP 3.1 Mac OS 10.6.6
I cannot activate the “Like” button because in every browser, Chrome, FF and Safari, theDesign tab does not work so I cannot set Position Settings.
All the entries on the first tab are fine but I cannot get to the other tabs. Inspector shows the code is there but the tab does not display.

I uninstalled and reinstalled, cleared cache, tried multiple browsers, restarted , all to no avail.
This is not an upgrade , but a brand new install.

I just had that problem and it took forever to figure out.
The solution was with WP getting confused about the WordPress address (URL) and the Blog address (URL) .
They looked fine in the General Settings panel but I cut and retyped each one and forced it to resave the settings each time and that fixed whatever had been busted

@mnr – in the edit panel, filter by category, then click the post checkbox at the bottom and then bulk action>delete
