In reply to: UTF-8 Database Converter works on WordPress 2.7I was skeptical of using UTF-8 Database Converter based on mixed results I read here, but I ran it on an older 2.6.2 blog before moving ahead to 2.8.4 and it worked without a hitch.

In reply to: Plugin Update Notification feature stopped workingI’ve noticed that I’m having the same issue on one of my WP sites. I gave it a few days, but nothing has shown up. I just looked manually and I have quite a few updates that are not showing up. I have no orange badge with a number on the “Plugin” navigation in the admin sidebar and I have no yellow “update” span on my Manage Plugins page.
I’m not even sure how long it’s not been working. I ran a plugin check using the Core Control plugin, and still nothing.

In reply to: Using “category” to start permalinksI read through the wp-testers discussion thread again and I’ve been doing my research before switching my permalink structure and frankly, I seem to find a lot of people using /%category%/%postname%/ as a custom option… this is not to say that it is wise, but it is fairly common.
In fact, several of the plugins I looked at that allow either multiple permalink structures (Advanced Permalinks, for one) or help you migrate links (Redirection, same author), even have features to use /%category%/ to start the link structure.
So this leads me to a few questions that I’m hoping someone can shed some light on:
If I change my entire structure to begin with the year or post ID, doesn’t WordPress handle this with the proper redirect already?
If I change my entire structure to begin with the year or post ID, does the single database field in the wp_options table that holds all the current information shrink back down to a more manageable (read: faster) size?
Will this “shortcoming” be changed in a future version of WordPress that make my concerns irrelevant for now?
And finally, does using a plugin like WP Super Cache help with this issue?
Thanks much,

In reply to: Using “category” to start permalinksThanks for the info… particularly the link.
So I’m thinking I may have no other option than to add the year or post ID. This is for a site that DOES have a current news/blog section (which benefits from the date) but the prime content is more evergreen, which is why I opted not to include the year/month in the first place.
Does anyone know if search engines put any weight to the link structure… as in whether a date is good now, but bad later when the date is old?

In reply to: [Plugin: Add to Any Share/Save/Bookmark Button] More than one feed? Thanks, for this thought.
Is there any way to use a DIFFERENT image in that second instance? This way it’s an obvious (and neat) way to display what you’re going to get when you click on it.
For example, I created custom button images for the subscribe and save/share buttons on Brian’s Belly.

In reply to: Schedule Posts Not Working in 2.5I just upgraded to 2.6 because of this issue, but it’s not fixed. I watched the publish time countdown for a few minutes (refreshing the manage posts page) until it said “1 min from now” and then it stayed that way for a few minutes and never fired… Now it’s counting back up!
