[Resolved] UTF-8 Database Converter works on WordPress 2.7

  • Just thought I would add a note that I’ve just run this successfully on a (backed-up) WP 2.7 install which was upgraded from WP 2.0.2.

  • Worked on 2.7 with only one ‘error’.

I had the word ‘fiancée’ in a recent post and when it was converted, it killed the rest of the post. Which was fine, I still had it open in notepad. Repaste, fixed. It’s the ONLY instance I had of that too, so yay!

It works great on WordPress 2.7 ne too! 😉

    confirm works on 2.7.1

Oh this was most excellent! Worked for me as well on 2.7.1 with one minor niggle: it didn’t update the kategories, but those were really easy to change by hand.

    Thanks a LOT!

It worked for me after an upgrade from 2.6.1 to WP 2.7.1, including category names. The blog is in Polish.

Yes! Worked for me too. Those warnings are pretty daunting though.
I just incrementally upgraded from 1.0 through each “major” upgrade to 2.7, while moving from linux to OS X, and hopefully this was my last step in getting it back to normal.

I just ran this on a 2.7.1 blog with a LOT of posts and comments, and it truncated all the posts and pages, as this person reported.

Hi sillybean, I had the same problem.

I eventually gave up on the more complicated processes and tried this script, which worked beautifully even though it did what the plugin author said not to do!

This is a serious issue that WordPress needs to address. I have several blogs that are now a few years old, with a mix of Latin and UTF-8 tables, and I suspect this has been the cause of some technical problems I’ve been experiencing.

The conversion guide on the codex needs to be made much clearer for those of use who don’t have much experience working with databases.

This plugin would be an ideal solution, if it worked reliably with 2.7+ Does the developer intend to update it? If not could someone please develop a solution? There are a lot of us who would be grateful – I’d gladly make a donation.

Thanks sillybean for the script link. I just used it and it seems to have worked fine!

This bbWP2UTF8 plugin fixed a few remaining issues that the above script couldn’t.

I was skeptical of using UTF-8 Database Converter based on mixed results I read here, but I ran it on an older 2.6.2 blog before moving ahead to 2.8.4 and it worked without a hitch.
