The editor works fine if it’s just text and hyperlinks to other pages but if you’re putting images, videos etc into the doc, then be prepared for a fight with the editor.
Yes, it may well be fine for the many (though I doubt it). For me, aside from the incessant ‘massaging’ of posts that I have to go through, it’s the incredible waste of time involved. What should be a straight-ahead job turns into a fight with the editor and since 3.01 appeared another bug has been added to the editor.
Now it can’t tell the difference between a p and a br, so now I have to remove blank lines after I’ve laid out the code in Dreamweaver correctly (I paste the raw html into Marsedit and upload to WP).
Now some are going to tell me I shouldn’t use Dreamweaver to prepare content, but when the copy has lots of links in it, it’s the easiest way to get it ready and it works for me and has done for the past two years (I put up a lot of posts, creative-i has getting on for 6,500 posts).
So I do hope the editor gets sorted soon.

In reply to: How come I never get an answer about WP’s awful editor?Well, I tried to rectify the situation of the awful editor by trying to use Marsedit but then he ‘upgraded it’ so it won’t work on a Powerpc Mac! So I’m stuck with the non-wysiswyg version.
EivindFS: Can it be such a difficult challenge? An editor is so basic to the Mac, but even tinymce is an add-on. Take it away and you’re left with a bare-bones editor. I don’t get it.

If you set tinymce to NOT strip out <p>s and such, it will put them in it seems wherever you have an image, a link to an external video and the like. Don’t ask me why it only does it when the post contains anything that isn’t plain text but it’s been like this ever since I started using WP.

I checked out the tip and it means that you have to switch between source and wysiwyg and I’ve noticed that when you switch between the modes and do a save, tinymce puts the spacer code back in again.
Even if it does work (I’ve not tried it yet), it’s a very clumsy solution.
Far better to modify the appropriate tinymce code.

A couple of things to start with:
inserting links seems not to work unless you’re in the back-end edit mode;
Sometimes, when posting, it doesn’t insert the title, behaving as if it’s a front page post;
If you edit a post on the front page, it displays as HTML only which is a drag.
I’ve not edited style.css
I like the idea of it being part BBS and part blog but I think the problem lies with the interface, or rather lack of it as the BBS part gives users only limited control, though I see that it’s not easy to put the back end editor on the front page.

In reply to: Why are links to PDF files live in the editor?Always. It’s a longstanding thing with the editor. You can turn it off (insert html entities) but I need it on because I need to export raw code and put it back into html documents for distribution.
BTW, the live pdf links does have something to do with Firefox on this machine but don’t ask me what it is.

In reply to: Why are links to PDF files live in the editor?Fishdogfish: Unfortunately, I have to continually switch between both modes as the editor insists on inserting the spacer code after I do a save, so I have to clean out the extra code.
Cubecolour: Yes, in Safari as well. I have a G4 laptop that I can try it on as well. I’ll let you know.

As to the mouse settings, I use the basic Apple mouse controls which are very minimal and there’s no way it could be the source of the problem.
Firefox maybe, but Safari as well? Look it’s no big deal, it’s just irritating like lots of other niggling things about the editor. I’ve been using a Mac since ’84 and I really think that WordPress deserves a much better and more reliable interface.
After all, for most users of WP it’s the major way they interact with the site on a regular basis.
If the Tinymce editor was a standalone app, how do you think it would fair up against the competition?
One million users demand the best, that’s why we use WP in the first place, but that doesn’t mean that as a ‘work in progress’ it can’t be criticized concerning where the programmers/designers priorities lie when it comes to development.

In reply to: Why are links to PDF files live in the editor?Mouse sensitivity? How so? Ordinary links in the editor don’t behave this way, only links to PDFs. The only controls the mouse has are double click speed, and mouse speed (on a Mac).

It seems tinymce can’t handle these properly. The worst thing about it is the time spent going back and editing the damn thing often over and over again to remove the unwanted blank lines.
On the other hand if you want to ADD a blank line, tinymce will strip them OUT!

In reply to: “Link” button not workingActually, it does work, it just doesn’t show up until you publish! I solved the problem by switching themes. A shame as I quite like the simplicity except for the fact that I wanted to remove the graphic but can’t get rid of the gigantic space it leaves behind.
