Thanks for your input I was lucky enough to restore the admin access via our sympathetic web host who help us at cost price . I am a volunteer helping upgrade the site of a charity. I thus have NO idea why it was not upgraded before now.
I do not really understand your comments related to FTP which I understand from decades ago to mean file transfer protocol. I can access the admin site and aside from 8 plug ins now back to the old versions, it was one of these when upgraded which crashed the admin access .
I have noted the theme which was created by a third party several years ago and agree it should be the default one in preparation for upgrade incrementally. Please note I am not a techie but someone with a reasonable grasp of technology provided it is clear and jargon free.
