The tinyMCE icon does not show up when posting in HTML mode, only in Visual mode. This might be obvious, but it took me some time to find out.
I found it out myself. I am using a heavily modified theme, which did not have the widget enabled on pages, so once i added it, everything worked just fine.
i solved it by making a custom template. somehow i missed this option when looking for a solution…
