Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Custom PHPYeah, probably an advanced plugin. You’d need to hire a PHP/JavaScript developer to build that. If you wanted integrated with WordPress then your developer would have to be familiar with WordPress, too.

In reply to: can wordpress be used for realtime caption? No, personally I don’t think WordPress is the solution…you’d be better off just using Twitter and then pulling your Twitter feed onto a simple web page. Don’t need WordPress for that.

In reply to: need some advice about building a type of membership siteSo by users, you mean brokers should be allowed to have members sign up to comment/participate on their sites? Well, if you use multi-site, then each site is separate, right? So Broker 1’s users wouldn’t be able to interact with Broker 2’s users. You could give each broker the ability to add users. The users don’t have to have an actual website. They can just be registered users who have whatever permissions you assign them. This is a default feature…
unless there’s something I’m missing…

In reply to: FluidBlue "about" and sidebar questions1. To fix the “About” links – Looks like the theme is set to link all of your WordPress pages (unless you’re using the updated version that supports WordPress 3.0 menus). Just delete the WordPress generic About Page by going to “Pages” in the Dashboard and deleting the page from the list.
2. To manage the sidebar, go to “Appearance > Widgets” in the Dashboard. Not sure if you’ve added any widgets yet (some themes include default widgets if you haven’t added any yourself). If you haven’t added any widgets, go ahead and drag the “Blogroll” widget to the sidebar, and proceed to change the widget title. To change the links, you’ll need to look on the left-hand side of the Dashboard and find the “Links” box. Expand it and you’ll see the options for adding new links.

In reply to: Webhosts – DreamHostI used to work for a newspaper that uses them. I find Dreamhost’s servers to be quite slow. But their tech support is good, and they have a sleek custom control panel.

In reply to: @font-face vs. Google Font: Which is faster?I believe the Google Font API is faster because the user does not need to download fonts from your own server (especially if you’re on a shared server). And you wouldn’t have to deal with copyright issues.

In reply to: need some advice about building a type of membership siteWP Mu Dev just came out with a plugin that might let you do what you’re hoping to do:
http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/membership
It’s not free though, you have to join that site (and it’s not GPL compatible) but it does do what you want.

In reply to: Using the word wordpress in my domain nameYou’re not allowed to use the word “WordPress” in your domain. Just use a different name for your domain, like “Support Press”. “WP” is also an option, I can think of several WordPress related sites that use “WP” along with another word related to their business.
Personally I think it’s not a good idea to use the name “WordPress” in your domain or in your business name. Aside from confusing customers (after all, you did say your customers will be non-tech savvy so you’ll be forever explaining to them that you’re not officially part of WordPress). Using a more generic name and then just using WordPress in your tagline or description is better, because 1) you don’t need to worry about trademark issues; and 2) you have room to expand your business scope beyond WordPress. Yes, WordPress is strong and vibrant but there’s no telling what the future holds, especially in the realm of open source software!
Just my 2 cents.
