Because form.js is included almost immediately before the closing body tag, changing from async to defer is not likely to have much of an effect (if any), but I’ll run some tests this week and make that change as long as there aren’t any unintended consequences. Thanks for the feedback!

In reply to: [Akismet Anti-spam: Spam Protection] Subject showing [SPAM]There’s a good chance it’s being added by whichever host handles your email. Their internal spam filter might be marking it as spam but still delivering it to you to avoid false positives.
Neither Akismet nor (as far as I can tell) Contact Form 7 adds “[SPAM]” to the subject line.
Thanks for the suggestion. Stopping spam user registrations is something we’ve looked at (and continue to look at) as a possible addition to Akismet. We’re aware of the problem that sites are facing with spam user registrations and hope to be able to contribute to a solution.

In reply to: [Akismet Anti-spam: Spam Protection] Compatibility with vTiger formsSorry, but I’m not aware of an Akismet integration for vTiger CRM. If you’re up to the task, our API documentation is here: https://akismet.com/development/api/#detailed-docs

In reply to: [Akismet Anti-spam: Spam Protection] Akismet & LearnpressHi Jo,
You’re right — Akismet wouldn’t interfere with viewing course content, and it appears that your site has never made a request to Akismet’s API, so I don’t think it is preventing users from posting reviews either.
You are welcome to ask the developer to contact us at support@akismet.com directly so we can work out why they think that Akismet is the problem.
It looks like you were doing manual testing of Akismet by filling out the contact form with random data. This is surprisingly similar to actual spam, which is why it was caught.
If real submissions are getting caught as spam, let us know, and we’ll take a look.

In reply to: [Akismet Anti-spam: Spam Protection] Failed error on Update pluginThis looks like there was an error in Jetpack at the same time that the Akismet plugin was being updated. This thread in the Jetpack forum deals with the same issue and may be helpful: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/declaration-of-jetpack_ixr_clientquery-should-be-compatible-with-ixr_client/

In reply to: [Akismet Anti-spam: Spam Protection] How do I know when spam is found?Generating a notification for each spam message would lead to spam getting more visibility, which is what Akismet is trying to prevent. If you absolutely need to review every contact form submission, you should consider disabling Akismet and manually approving each one.
You could also review the contents of the spam queue once a day or once a week; spam messages are only auto-deleted every 15 days.

In reply to: [Akismet Anti-spam: Spam Protection] How do I know when spam is found?WordPress by default doesn’t alert you when you get new spam, so you’d have to use a plugin to add that type of notification. I’ve never used it, but this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/notification/ claims that it can do that.
Let’s say it was definitely the changes I made. 🙂 Glad to hear it’s working better.

In reply to: [Akismet Anti-spam: Spam Protection] Performance IssuesPerformance issues are hard to diagnose without direct access to the website, but can you confirm that the issue was present in version 4.1.8 but not if you downgrade to 4.1.7? (You can install 4.1.7 by downloading https://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/akismet.4.1.7.zip and then uploading it to your site.)
There’s no way to report them, but I’ll take a look at our settings for determining what’s considered discardable to make sure we have it tuned properly.
The bar for what is discarded automatically is pretty high so as not to automatically discard something that has any chance of being a false positive. I’d wager that you were just lucky for a while. 🙂
Is the issue that spam comments are being approved by Akismet or that they’re being caught but not automatically deleted?
