In reply to: Questions about plugin updates@joyously Thank you for the reply. I understand what you are saying in points 1 and 2. I am trying to understand *why* a developer might use the methods I describe.
For example, Elementor (like many other plugins) offers both free and paid versions of their plugins. Others, like UpdraftPlus (as an example) and the other plugin I originally asked about, use a single plugin for both free and paid. Is one method better than the other? Why would a developer choose one method over the other, especially since the plugin I inquired about raises tons of alerts in the malware scanner?
Again, I understand the why of the alerts. The plugin version in the repository is the free version, and when I purchased and activated the pro version the files on my server were changed. How is that different from my example plugin UpdraftPlus?
I do not think the developer is intentionally violating any guidelines. Instead, I think the developer may not fully understand what they are doing and have created a great plugin but otherwise made a mess when it comes to maintaining that plugin.
Bottom line is, IMHO, the developer created these issues because they have no idea what they are doing when it comes to managing, e.g., updating and differentiating between free and pro versions, the plugin.
I just downloaded the plugin and checked the file in question. The same code is in it: $our_keys[$updraft_key_index][‘publickey_remote’] = base64_decode($_GET[‘public_key’]);
Since this code is in the fresh download, I know it is there by design. Whether that design is good or bad I do not know, although since you are a plugin contributor I will go ahead and ignore this suspicious file in my malware scanner.
I have already raised a ticket with WebToffee, since this appears to be an issue in the commercial and not the free version.
Hi again – I opened the file webtoffee-gdpr-cookie-consent.zip, which was downloaded from https://www.webtoffee.com/my-account/my-api-downloads/. That file clearly has a folder named cli-themes and a file named cli-themes.php as can be seen here: https://prnt.sc/15i0qj2
My sincere apologies. I apparently missed actually copying the file location when I pasted it into the ticket. The file in question is /wp-content/plugins/webtoffee-gdpr-cookie-consent/admin/modules/cli-themes/cli-themes.php and not bootstrap.php. That file was from a different plugin that I also reported for a different reason.

In reply to: [PW WooCommerce Bulk Edit] Compatibility with UpdraftPlus PremiumGreetings,
Unfortunately, I did not note the older version numbers of any of the plugins as I had never run into this issue before and initially felt like I was making a silly mistake.
I can tell you I try to keep WordPress, plugins, and themes updated regularly, so my best estimate is that the plugin versions were one step back from what they are now. The current version of PW WooCommerce Bulk Edit is 2.88, and the version of UpdraftPlus Pro I installed and attempted to activate was 2.16.58.25.
Here is a list of all plugins: https://prnt.sc/14p54ly
The theme is Astra version 3.5.0, WordPress 5.7.2, and PHP 7.4.16. I tried setting PHP to 8.0.3, but the site experiences an error with PHP 8.x.

In reply to: [W3 Total Cache] Broken site even after W3 is deactivatedHi – I don’t have any similar experiences where I have deactivated W3 Total Cache, and I do it a lot. If I have it *enabled*, then I need to remember to purge the caches whenever I make any changes; however, I have deactivated it many times, and even uninstalled it a few times without issues.

In reply to: SMTP: A bug, or how it is?I am certainly aware WordPress is not Joomla!. I guess the old joke about needing a plugin to do anything meaningful in WordPress still rings true. π Thanks for the info.
Thanks so much for the detailed reply. I figured it was something like that. I never mind paying for quality solutions. We have a lot of small clients who have niche sites, and the actual price for “genuine” Yoast is a bit too steep. Customers seem to be finding these sites okay as they are; however, we are trying to standardize on a set of plugins we use for most (if not all) clients. Yoast looks like it is a great solution, just a bit pricey for small sites. Cheers!
Hi Ethan – Thank you for the update. This will not work in our situation, unfortunately. Perhaps instead of building all date fields as “fancy fields”, it might have been better to allow a basic date picker. Then some conditional logic in the pro version. That way people could test some basic forms and make a decision to upgrade if pro does what they want/need it to do. As it is now, date picking/entry without jumping through any hoops is essential IMHO. It is disappointing your team did not agree.
My apologies for piggybacking someone else’s thread, but since it is recent I thought it would be better to add my disappointment here rather than create another post.
I was looking for a basic date input field, and found that is only available in the Pro version. Really?!? Disappointing.
I understand you want to make money, but if I cannot try out relatively basic functionality, there is no way I am buying anything. I sure miss Joomla! in this regard.
Note that even if you offer a money-back guarantee, I don’t want to feel pressured to build out and test a form within x days.
Okay, thank you.
