Thanks Eddu73 – here is what I had to do:

1. remove the previous “Consumer key” and “Consumer secret” – then save changes
2. delete the plugin
3. add the plugin
4. follow the steps you listed above
5. After all that, then I had to edit the plugin and use the ‘Twitter username’ dropdown and select my user name

Now my site is back up and running as wanted.
