Okay. When you edited that user, then, did you set his role to the s2Member Level he should have? Did you save the profile after the change?
Did you add an EOT time to his profile? s2Member would only demote him to Subscriber on EOT. Does the Admin Notes box mention a demotion?

If the user doesn’t get your email on registration, it sounds like a problem with WordPress’ emails in general, not something specific to s2Member…

You could have them register for free with that, and then once logged in, show them a PayPal button to upgrade their account. WP Admin -> s2Member -> PayPal Buttons
If you want the payment to happen before signup, then you’ll need to use the deafult wp-login.php registration, otherwise the account won’t get the paid access he just paid for (Gravity Forms doesn’t pick this up).

An s2Member pro-form using Express Checkout would do that.
What you can do to avoid that confusion is change the “refunds/partial refunds/chargebacks trigger immediate EOT” setting so it only demotes on chargebacks, not refunds. WP Admin -> s2Member -> PayPal Options -> Auto EOT Behavior

Yes, s2Member doesn’t cancel the subscription for you when it does the EOT on a refund. You have to cancel it yourself.

If it’s an unlimited sites license, you can have all the sites you want with the pro add-on. If you have the single site license, then you can use it in only one live site (development installations are fine, they aren’t counted for the license). So two live installations, one in www and another in a different subdomain, would not be covered by the single site license, you’d need the unlimited sites one.
