My host (Total Choice Hosting) had the answer:
the Grouptivity plugin was not compatible with the newest version of WordPress.
I disabled the plugin and the permalinks immediately started working!
Now I’m going to go out on a limb and try pretty permalinks…
I’m still trying but haven’t succeeded. (thanks for trying, darknumchuck) Any other ideas?
