There is no issue in modifying the file. The only problem is that you have to modify the same on every update provided by the plugin.
By the way, we released v1.5.3 of the plugin yeserday that fixed few bugs present in previous versions and you can also “Geo-targeted links” that enable Amazon Associates to create content customized for and better monetize their international traffic. More details here.

We tested the same on our end but couldn’t see any trailing or leading whitespaces. Is this issue on default template or custom template created by you? Please share the template’s HTML.

There is no CSS added by us actually for default ProductLink template. In order to make it work:
1. Select Visual mode of default WordPress editor(TinyMCE)
2. Select a word from text & then hit the search button.
3. Select any one product from pop-up & add a shortcode.Please re-open this thread if you face any issue after this.
