Jeremy, after 4 days I still see the mystery author with most of the hits and all those links point to the non existing testbed.biz URLs. Out of 96 views, 64 are pointing to testbed.biz under the mystery author.

Thank you Jeremy, I will track the stats for the next week and holler if I need further help.

The posts exist on the real, live site. Perhaps I should take you on your offer to reverse the merge and leave the live site, keptlight.com stats. The other site does not exist even as a test site.

    Appreciate the help, thanks.

OK, I understand. But why am I getting current view stats from the other site? I am assuming what I marked with arrows are stats from one day, yesterday. Even today, I see more view indications on testbed.biz. My question still is why are the stats referring to a site that disappeared about three weeks ago? If you separate the testbed.biz stats, what will happen to the current visits since they refer to the site that I removed about 3 weeks ago?

Thank you for shedding some light on this.

Oh, i am glad I wrote this comment because I had no idea about its function. Now that you explained the real purpose, it makes eminent sense. I checked the message which was essentially a welcome to the new version and the red dot be gone! Thank you,

That’s the one! I’m glad I’m not the only one.

Thanks Jeremy. Yes, that is a staging site and JetPack suggested that I enable the Development mode. Despite my clicks on the button to make that happen, it kept coming back with a message to the effect that something went wrong and I should try again. After a few attempts that message disappeared and I presumed that it enabled the Development mode. Looking back, I realize that the proper thing to do was to disable JetPack on the staging domain to eliminate any confusion. I will do that if there is a next time.

JetPack was disconnected on my site now, perhaps because of your merging actions. I connected it back to WordPress.com and I can now see my past stats as well, both on my site and WordPress.com.

    Thank you.

Back again, I added the line to the fucntions.php and lo and behold, the problem is fixed.

Please do consider including this line in the functions.php file.

    Thank you again,

Thank you Nick, I will check the functions file. I have been using the same theme for several years now, I’m not sure what caused the change. That said, what is the harm in adding this line in the functions.php file as a matter of course?

I will try and post again to bring closure to the question. Thank you.

Ah-ha! I restrict access to wp-content in robots.txt file and allow access to specific folders. I will add the wflogs to the allowed side.

While trying to trouble shoot for another plugin, I disabled many plugins and deleted them along with their data. After that, I installed Wordfence again and this time it went through with no error messages at all; I thought all was good! Thanks for the deeper look, I will fix that folder access issue.

    Thank you,

    Cemal

Lester, good news! My hosting provider enabled those functions and the backup works like a charm. While at it, I asked the same functions be enabled on several other sites I maintain.

All is good, thank you for your guidance and feedback. I am marking this ticket as resolved.

Thanks Lester, I was using wp-db-backup and switched to wp-db-manager. If the need be, I will revert to that.

Too bad about the clutter not being possible to clean in the options table. I did some manual cleaning by tracing the option name through Google searches to plugins I once tried. Since I no longer used them I deleted those rows, I hope I did not do a boo-boo! That was a while ago and my site is still functioning with no ill effects.

Thank you for your feedback on backup substitutes and the options table clutter.

Well, I may need to find a different backup option if these functions are not available to me. I do like your plugins, this one and WP-Sweep.

Since you are intimately familiar with the innards of the databases, I have a suggestion for a plugin. After installing and removing various plugins, and for other reasons I’m sure, the database tables end up with excessive crud. I have not found a robust and easy to use method to clean up the gunk in especially the wp_options table. Do you think this can be done?

Thank you for your help, I will let you know when I hear from my hosting provider.

I asked my hosting provider to enable those functions. Although they enabled them on another site for me, they are now saying it is a security breech for the server. They are doing some internal conversation as to how the original enabling was done, or was it done against the policies.

Does it really pose a security threat to the server if these functions are enabled?

Thank you Lester, I have downloaded the files and wrote them over the ones in the plugin folder. When I go to DB Backup all three show as disabled: passthru() disabled, system() disabled, exec() disabled. But then the next line says: Excellent. You Are Good To Go. You may consider changing that line when one or more of these fail to pass the test to read something like “Without these functions DB Backup will not function. You may consider contacting your hosting company and ask them to enable them.” Which is what I will do. Now that I understand what is going on, I remember facing the same issue on another site but the functions showed as disabled. My hosting company enabled them and I was good to go.

I will update this post after I contact my provider to close the loop, stay tuned.

    Thank you,

    Cemal
