First and foremost try to identify what is breaking things by just disabling CSS or JS or HTML or Image optimization (incl. lazyload). Based on that we can see what the next steps need to be 🙂

So I disabled everything and slowly started turning it back on. It’s definitely when I select “Optimize CSS Code?” that the site breaks. What do you recommend doing to Optimize CSS?
OK, first off try disabling the “also aggregate inline CSS” option maybe?
Tried that and still broke the site. It seems like whenever I even turn on your CSS features it just breaks.
does this also happen when “aggregate CSS” is off? can you configure it that way so I can have a look at your staging’s frontend HTML?
If you take a look now, I have Optimize CSS Code? ON and the rest of the options OFF.
How does configure is to show the frontend HTML?
Can you try re-enabling the “serve as static files” option?
That seems to have worked. After running through the staging site in Pagespeed Insights, Desktop looks great. Mobile is having a much lower score though.

Is there a way to resolve this for mobile? These aren’t appearing on Desktop.
Autoptimize merely optimizes the JavaScript added by your theme, plugins and WordPress core, apart from combining and/or minifying JS Autoptimize improve as it cannot change the logic or execution time of that logic. Try re-testing your site using https://stagesortable.wpengine.com/?ao_noptimize=1 which shows results with AO disabled, seems like a lot of the recommendations are for JS-files that are part of your theme?
hope this helps,
