Smush and WP 7.1?

    Hello @rcharbonxx ,

    I hope you are doing well.

    WordPress 7.1 ships client-side media processing, which handles images directly in the user’s browser using WebAssembly. This feature is a nice addition to WordPress.

    However, currently, all modern browsers don’t support this feature. Client-side processing depends on Document-Isolation-Policy to enable SharedArrayBuffer, which is currently only available in Chromium-based browsers.

    Chrome and Edge browser minimum version 137+ is needed for this feature to work. Older versions of Chrome and Edge do not support this feature. Chrome on Android supports the feature from version 146.
    Also, Firefox and Safari do not support this feature.

    On unsupported browsers, WordPress falls back to server-side processing automatically.

    As you can see, this feature is not yet fully supported by all the major browsers. So, it may leave unoptimized images on your site.

    On the contrary, Smush doesn’t have any browser compatibility issues. Smush has additional features that improve the site’s performance.

    So, in my opinion, one still needs Smush. However, sometimes it depends on the person’s requirements.

    @rcharbonxx hi, according to our benchmarks Smush produces almost the same savings with the new client-side thumbnails as it did for the PHP side thumbnails.

    In fact the client side thumbnails are bigger than their PHP side counterparts in many situations.

    A simple test you can do is upload the same image through the block editor as well as the media library, then compress them both using Smush and check the stats, chances are, you will see the same savings in both cases.

    As far as we can tell, the client side change does thumbnail generation, it doesn’t optimize images. Bottom line is that your site still gets the same benefit from Smush.
