• We rebuilt the website in a new WP Engine WordPress installation while retaining the same public domain. The domain now points to the new installation. Site Kit was still connected to the old installation when the DNS was changed. I subsequently used Tools → Available Tools → Reset Site Kit on the old installation, but the new installation still reports: “The request to the authentication proxy has failed with an error: a site with the given URL already exists.” Please check and reset the domain’s Site Kit record on the authentication service so that Site Kit can be connected from the new WordPress installation. Thank you!

Hi there, sorry to hear you’re having some trouble with your migration!

I took a look at your site’s registration and it looks like a site is already registered for the URL you are trying to connect, but the new site is using credentials that belong to another. I can’t say how that happened but it can happen (e.g. if you cloned the current site from another once SK was connected). Not to worry though, it just means the new site needs to reconnect to the authentication service to get the correct credentials rather than for something to be changed on our end.

The simplest fix is to do a Site Kit reset on the new installation and then set it up again as usual.

If you’d rather not do that to preserve the settings, and you’re comfortable with trying a workaround, you could delete the googlesitekit_credentials option and then go to Site Kit > Dashboard and “Sign in with Google” (the main button to start the set up), not the button in an error message, if you see one. That should get you back up and running, just know that any other users who had signed in to Site Kit will need to sign in again due to the change in site credentials, but that’s it, all other settings related to tagging, etc should be preserved.

If at any point in that process something still doesn’t work with Site Kit, you can always go the full reset route, the above is just an alternative to avoid that if setting up again would be problematic.

This is something we’re planning on making easier, but let me know how it goes!

    Hi @markwoodruff,

I’m just following up with you to check whether you’ve had an opportunity to delete the credentials as advised above, or reset Site Kit? Should you require further assistance with this, let us know.
