In the left admin menu, go to Appearance > Widgets.
There should be a “box” which indicates your sidebar.
On the left is all the different widgets you can ‘drag-and-drop’ into the sidebar.
There may be more than one sidebar (…one may be for the footer), so drag a widget into it, open and save the widget, then see where the widget is.
I have tried that with each one and nothing shows up at all on any of them?
Try to assign a text widget for all the widget locations, you can see any one of them in front page.
ive done that and found which one is for the right hand side.
Im a complete novice to all this so sorry for the questions but what do i do now? What is the text widget? Is these any way of having it as a ‘blog roll’ for the most recent posts i put up?
There is a drag-and-drop widget named “Recent Posts”. Check the drag-and-drop widgets on the left, they all have names.

Just drag-and-drop the “Recent Posts” widget to where you have the “hello” message now.
“hello” message which shows from text widget.
Hi “alipaly”….first, no worries about being a novice, WordPress can take some time to get used to how things are done with it.
I just went to your website and see you have a text widget titled as Hello, so I am assuming you were able to get a widget in the right sidebar? Or, is it that other widgets cannot be dragged into the Page Right Sidebar position with the “Hello” widget?
ive got the ‘recent posts’ widget and have dragged it over to where my ‘text’ widget is but it just won’t show on the homepage
The only widget that i can get to appear is the text one. I’ve tried recent posts, recent comments and tag clouds but none of them will show. The guys on here suggested trying text widget and that has appeared but nothing else
Do you have posts in posts list ?
You should have posts, comments for post and tags assigned to posts, otherwise they will not be appear.
Try this…. drag another Text Widget there and add some sample text to it and see if that shows up.
Also, just as it was just mentioned by Softound Solutions, you will want to make sure that you do have posts already published in your blog for widgets like Recent Posts, Comments, etc (which are related to the blog posts). If you don’t have any posts, those won’t show.
You can also try widgets in the right sidebar like Search, another text widget, Meta, and Pages.
You did right and you are in right place, what you have to do is to create some posts and publish them.
