Plugin triggered a fatal error

When I updated this plugin to 1.9.1 my backend went blank. PHP log showed the following error:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_OBJECT_OPERATOR in /retail/wp-content/plugins/facebook-events-widget/facebook-events-widget.php on line 285

I renamed the folder for this plugin and was able to access the backend again. I renamed the folder for this plugin back to original and tried to activate it again and received the following message:

Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_OBJECT_OPERATOR in /retail/wp-content/plugins/facebook-events-widget/facebook-events-widget.php on line 285.
