despite the fact that i choose the setting to center images in the slideshow, they still aren’t centered. why is that/how can i fix it?

That is most likely due to your theme conflicting with the stylesheets of the plugin. Have you peeked into the code with a developer tool like firebug or chrome inspect element yet?
