chmod -R 777 magic-gallery hasn’t caused the plugin to work.
None of my thumbnails are being created or displayed as far as I can tell – including the demo images provided, and pikachoose is completely broken. Lightbox will load the full pictures when I click on the broken thumbnail, but that’s all the functionality I’m getting out of the plugin thus far.

My thumbnails are not showing up either but I think I know what the problem is, but I am not sophisticated enough (yet) to edit the code …
I am on wp 3.1.3 and magic gallery 2.0
however, we are using WordPress MU Domain Mapping to have the network sites install as subdomains. the server admin is using a wildcard DNS to have the names resolve. I know you fixed the thumb calling, but I don’t think it was designed for this situation.
Can I email you the specifics? i am pretty sure it is just a tweak of the code where is it trying to call the thumb from… maybe in the image.php… but i was hoping you could advise if you had a moment.
i can tell from the 500 page i get when trying to view the thumb that is looking in the wrong place.
the actual full size image works great clicked on.
and yes, I CHMOD’d all the right files!

A quick update: After debugging some of these issues I decided to rewrite the plugin completely, by using custom post types and the default wordpress attachment system. This way, all of these issues here should be resolved.
