We’ve created a new GTM account recently and updated it on our website via Site Kit. This has worked in the sense that it is pulling new data through accurately. However, we still can see the old GTM container code in our website code, even though via Site Kit it looks as if it was removed & replaced.

Can someone advise on how we can remove this code? It’s causing issues with our GA4 and IP address exclusions.

Hi there @hannahtanell, thanks for getting in touch. I’d be happy to take a look at this for you. Please could you first share the information below:

    1. Your Site Health information. You can use this form to share privately if preferred.
    2. Did you have your GTM code placed via Site Kit previously and have you placed it using another third party plugin or manually in the past?

Once you share the information I can review your site and setup to see if I can spot what’s placing the unwanted code on your site. Let me know if you have any other questions in the meantime.

Okay I’ve just submitted the site health via the form.

The old GTM code was placed via Site Kit. I’m not 100% sure it wasn’t placed manually or via another plugin (as I wasn’t on the team at the time) but I don’t think so.

@hannahtanell Thanks for sharing. I have reviewed your site setup details and checked your site using https://tagassistant.google.com/ and I can only see one GTM container found. Could you explain further where you’re seeing the old container?

I have also checked your site source code and only see the same container as the that’s found with the tag assistant so as far as I can see, everything looks correct.

Here is som code that is currently on the site, you can see GT-NGWQWKLV in here twice (as well as 1 other place in the code), which is the old GTM.

And then the biggest issue is that GA4 is automatically linking the old GTM under Admin > Data Streams > Configure Tag Settings. This is not something I can manually update to the new code, but it just scans the site & pulls whichever one it finds. Here is the issue because our main goal is to update the IP tracking in here.

I have screenshots of both of these but can’t seem to attach an image to this thread.

    Thanks, Hannah

@hannahtanell You can share screenshots to the private form if you wish and I can review them there.

@hannahtanell The code snippet you shared above is the code placed by Site Kit and I don’t see any issues there, that all looks good to me.

With regards to your other issue you mention, is this within the Site Kit plugin itself or in the Analytics platform? As mentioned above, please feel free to share your screenshots to the private form and I can review this in more detail.

Hi, I don’t see an option to add screenshot attachments into this form. Am I missing something?

The issue with the code I posted is that this code GT-NGWQWKLV is in there and it’s the old one that shouldn’t be. Can you confirm you can see this tag in the code? This is the problem.

@hannahtanell Rather than attach the image files, you can upload them to Google Drive and share the URL to them in the private form.

I understand regarding the GT code. When checking your Analytics module settings in Site Kit, do you have the correct Analytics property selected? Feel free to also share a screenshot of these settings for us to see.

    Thread Starter hannahtanell

    (@hannahtanell)

Okay I’ve shared the some screenshots from GA4 & GTM via the form (within the Data Streams section).

Yes we have the correct property selected in GA4.

If you view the source HTML and search for the following: GT-NGWQWKLV (old code) and GTM-W7KWNHWS (new code). view-source:https://podero.com/

Is it possible to get on a call or live chat? I feel like this is making it more complicated that we can’t communicate instantly.

@hannahtanell Thanks for sharing the screenshots. These are from both the Tag Manager and Analytics platforms so we’re limited in the support we can offer for anything configured in these platforms. You can check the help centers for each platform for more help with these:

The codes you’ve shared above are for two different modules (Analytics, Tag Manager). Site Kit is placing the Analytics tag that you’ve selected, which you can check by going to Site Kit > Settings > Connected Modules > Analytics.

The GTM code is your Tag Manager code. The GT code is your Google Tag which contains Analytics property and Ads property which you can see when checking from https://tagassistant.google.com/.

As noted above, if you need assistance with making changes to these via the platforms then you will find the assistance needed from the dedicated help centers. If you nee help specifically with Site Kit then I can certainly help you with that but from what I can see, Site Kit is working as expected.

I hope this helps but if you have any other questions then please let me know.

As we didn’t receive a response I’ll mark this as resolved. Feel free to open a new support topic if you continue to encounter issues, or reopen this topic and we’d be happy to assist.
