I have created several backup jobs which all are scheduled between 02:00 and 03:00 a.m.
They all were successfully performed last night. However there is an additional job about which the log says it was run manually just 2 minutes after midnight. I’m very sure, that I did not start a backup job at that time! The log also says, the backup contains files, data and plugins all saved on the server. This is a combination what I never configured.
    Any explanation?

    Hi,

Thanks for the details. That unexpected backup sounds like it might be a legacy job from an older BackWPUp version.

Could you please confirm which version of BackWPUp you’re currently using?

If you’re on version 5.1 or later, you can check for legacy jobs under:

Advanced Settings > Jobs > Access to Legacy Jobs

Here’s a direct link for convenience:

    /wp-admin/admin.php?page=backwpup-jobs&legacy=true

If you find any old jobs there that you no longer need, feel free to delete them; that should stop any unexpected runs.

Let me know what you find and I’ll be happy to guide further if needed.

I’m using version 5.3.1 of the plugin. The page with legacy jobs doesn’t show any jobs. It says: No legacy jobs.
However, when I looked at the legacy job page for the first time, it had two additional lines, which said:
    DROPBOX: (400) Falscher Eingabeparameter. Antwort vom Server: {“error”: “invalid_grant”, “error_description”: “code doesn’t exist or has expired”}
    DROPBOX: (400) Falscher Eingabeparameter. Antwort vom Server: {“error”: “invalid_grant”, “error_description”: “code doesn’t exist or has expired”}
Those lines don’t include time/date, so it’s not possible to tell, to which job they belong.

And furthermore those two lines were gone, when a looked a second time at the legacy job page.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the follow-up.

That’s definitely strange. The backup type you described (files, database, and plugins all in one job) was only possible in legacy jobs, so if no legacy jobs exist on your sites, we’ll need more details to investigate further.

    A few things to check:

    • Which version did you notice this happening in?
    • Have you been updating the plugin continuously from older versions (like 4.x)?
    • Did you try reinstalling the plugin fresh to see if the issue goes away?

If the above doesn’t help, we’d really appreciate it if you could share the data from your database so we can look deeper.

Please export the contents of the backwpup_jobs field from the wp_options table (sensitive info can be removed). Here’s an example of what to copy:

You can paste the contents on https://pastebin.com/ and share the link here.

    We’ll take it from there.

I have been using BackWPUp for a long time (from 4.x) without any problems. During that time I also installed every update. Unfortunatley I didn’t notice in time, that version 5.x caused some problems. I noticed that, because my backup-files were twice the size than before and blow up my dropbox.
Because I couldn’t access the old backup-jobs, I decided to deactivate und deinstall BackWPUp completely und to reinstall the latest version, which was 5.3.1

After setting all backup-jobs new and some manual tests, I found a few days later one mysterious backup-job, which I never configured and which I never started manually.

When I now look at the page with the backup-history this mysterious job is gone. Also some other jobs are gone in the meantime.

    Hello,

    Thank you for your patience.

As I asked for certain details to troubleshoot further, one of the users shared database details.

While only two jobs were visible in their BackWPUp dashboard, the database shows there are actually four jobs:

    • Job ID 1 – Files monthly (visible in the UI)
    • Job ID 2 – Database monthly (visible in the UI)
    • Job ID 4 – First backup (default job)
    • Job ID 3 – “Backup Now” job, which should not normally be there and can create a full backup stored locally.

We tried to replicate this setup on our end but couldn’t trigger the same result. It would be very helpful if others experiencing the issue could also check and verify their own database by looking at the wp_options → backwpup_jobs field.

In the meantime, please also use a plugin like WP Crontrol to list all cron jobs on your site and check whether Job ID 3 and/or Job ID 4 appear in your scheduled tasks. WP Crontrol lets you easily filter by the job name to confirm this.

    Best Regards,

Thank you for the investigation of the above mentioned problems.
As I said in my last comment, the mysterious backup-job disappeared from the backup-history page. So there is no need for further investigation – unless it will appear again.

However, watching the backup history page for some time, shows that it can easily be misunderstood. I first thought, it shows all backup-jobs ever beeing started (and finished). Now I think, it shows only those jobs, where the files are still available. If this is true, it explains, why my mysterious job disappeared from the history page. Because I manually deleted the file from my server.
Maybe this should be explained more clearly.

    Hi @tooni,

Thanks for the follow-up. Just to let you know, there is a known issue in recent versions where the pagination controls are missing from the history page, so only the most recent backups are visible. This will be fixed in an upcoming update.

In the meantime, you can still access older backups by manually changing the page number in the URL. For example:

    /wp-admin/admin.php?page=backwpupbackups&page_num=2

I’ll close this ticket for now. If you found the support helpful, you’re welcome to share your experience here: https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/backwpup/reviews/#new-post; it’s always appreciated but never mandatory.

    Cheers!
