Hey there, @bward!
Thank you for reaching out to us about this, and for explaining what’s happening in detail. I’ve taken a look at your site, and also left a test comment; you can safely discard that comment.
This is happening because you’ve specified a default avatar, for visitors without a chosen Gravatar:
You’ll notice that the links on your site are correct; they are Gravatar URLs:
– https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/a2598698356b45237c2c5aabca56fa35?s=120&d=https%3A%2F%2Fworldeventsandthebible.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2018%2F08%2Fweb-member-avatar.png&r=g
Due to a quirk in how our caching works, the above URL redirects to Jetpack’s CDN URL, since we do not want to repeatedly download/cache the same image:
Both Gravatar and Jetpack’s CDN are governed by Automattic’s Privacy Policy, which we detail here:
If you would like to restrict user avatars to local-only storage, please disable WordPress’ Avatar Display setting, accessible from Settings → Discussion. WordPress’ default avatar feature relies on Gravatar.
There are alternative avatar plugins that may provide what you’re looking for. One of my teammates has had good luck with these:
– https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-user-avatar/
Please let us know if you have any questions, we’re happy to help! 🙂

Mark, great follow up. Much appreciated.
I think you nailed it for me when you said, “WordPress’ default avatar feature relies on Gravatar”.
So you cannot use the WordPress “Avatar” feature without using the Gravatar service essentially. Even though I am hosting the image. That is too bad, but at least I understand and we have no issues.
Thanks so much.

Very happy to help! I’m hopeful that some of the alternatives I’ve linked to can address this issue for you. There are also many other plugins that accomplish this.
If interested, there’s more context/back-and-forth on Gravatar’s integration with WordPress, here:

We’ll be here if you’d like help with anything else! 🙂
