I’m using theme TwentyTen on WP version 4.0 which it says is the latest.

thanks for getting back to me! Would you be so kind and check something for me? If you haven’t tried it already, please disable the BPS plugin and see if that changes anything…also a list of your other plugins would help a lot.

I’ve switched off the widget in edit mode and I can now see html view, but the screen is a third smaller – and of course I can’t use the plugins function there.
