I am curious if there is a best practice for adding in custom variables or extending the dataLayer through this plugin.

e.g. perhaps adding in a custom field variable into the dataLayer… {my_custom_field: page_custom_field}

Hi,

This is easy if your are familiar with PHP coding and WP hooks.
You can use the GTM4WP_WPFILTER_COMPILE_DATALAYER constant to hook into a WP filter where you filter function gets the datalayer (as an Array) as it is at this stage, you can alter content or add your own variables.

No, sorry, instead of add_action, use add_filter:
