Could Not Create Directory

    I need to update some plugins, and then update to 4.4.2

    In attempting to update plugins this error occurs with all three:

    “The update process is starting. This process may take a while on some hosts, so please be patient.

    Enabling Maintenance mode…

    Updating Plugin Akismet (1/3)
    Downloading update from https://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/akismet.3.1.7.zip…
    Unpacking the update…

    An error occurred while updating Akismet: Could not create directory.”

    I went and changed all the CHMODs for the wp-content directory, plugins directory, and individual plugins directory to 777. Error persists.

    I added “define(‘FS_METHOD’,’direct’);” to the wp-config.php file. Error persists.

    I could do a manual install, but can’t seem to find where to download the updates for Akismet, Jetpack, and Yoast SEO. Regardless, I still need to fix this issue so that the updates will automatically install.

    As for the folder permissions, I would highly recommend reaching out to your hosting company because it is very possible it could be an operating system setting or group permission that isn’t set properly. I have seen it a few times.

    Thanks for those links.

    My suspicion was that perhaps since I am on Cpanel that perhaps the apache was not being allowed to create directories, but I have installed updates before, so it not being allowed made no sense to me.

    Is this what you are thinking when you mention the folder permissions?

    I have put in a support ticket to cPanel. My hosting co. is basically me 🙂
