Cannot Save a Custome HTML Widget
-
I have a few Custom HTML widgets on my right menu, one being a Positive Affirmation.
I’m trying to edit the header to say ‘Positive Affirmation/Quote’ it will not save the widget when I edit?
This has been working fine until recently?
Thanks
The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

Does any error appear when you try to save it?
Hi James,
Thanks for the reply.
No error message appears, when I edit the text, the ‘Save’ button becomes active, but when I click it, nothing happens?
If I try to move to another page it warns me because the changes haven’t been saved.
Ok, this may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and switch to the default Twenty Seventeen theme. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of the problem.
If you can install plugins, install Health Check. On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.
Hi James,
I have tried to run Health Check, it was already installed. I didn’t see the button to click on?
There was a note at the bottom ‘Loopback Request’ with
“The loopback request to your site failed, this may prevent WP_Cron from working, along with theme and plugin editors.<br>Error encountered: (0) cURL error 28: Operation timed out after 10001 milliseconds with 0 bytes received”
PHP is also running 7.0.29, but apparently needs 7.2, how do I update this?
Thanks
Does the Loopback error still exist with all plugins except Health Check deactivated?
If not, then re-activate each plugin individually until you find the one causing the problem.
If the Loopback error is still there with all plugins except Health Check deactivated, are you running any security plugins? If so, which?
Is that the button that I need to press to disable all Plugins?
Or do I deactivate them individually to see if the error goes away?
I’m running WordFence Security plugin.
Thanks
In the Plugins section of your site’s Dashboard, you can check all plugins except Health Check and bulk-deactivate them.
The the Loopback error goes away, re-activate each plugin individually until you find the one causing the problem.
Hi James,
I de-activated each Plugin, none helped to make my widget to save once edited, but the Health Check Loopback had gone.
So I activated each plugin in sequence, none caused the Health Check Loopback to return, I now have the JHealth Check running with no errors except the PHP Version, running “7.0.29 – For performance and security reasons, we strongly recommend running PHP version 7.2 or higher”
My widget still doesn’t save when edited, could it be the PHP version causing it?
Thanks
No, it won’t be the PHP version causing it, but I’m glad the loopback error is gone. 🙂
The next thing to rule-out is your theme. If you temporarily switch to the Twenty Seventeen theme, are you able to save the widget?
Hi James,
I switched to Twenty Seventeen, I was still unable to edit my widget, the Loopback error didn’t re=appear!
What next?
What’s the best way to update the PHP, as it will definitely need upfdting at some point?
Thanks
Paul
Are you using any sort of caching plugin, or do you see a “Clear/Purge Cache” button in your Dashboard or admin bar? If so, would you please try clearing the cache?
Note: You do not need to install a caching plugin at this point just to clear a cache you don’t have. If you don’t have a caching plugin or a way to clear a server-level cache, just say so. 🙂
Hi James,
I do not have a cache plugin installed on this site, though I have deleted the cach, with no change on the widget saving?
Thanks
Paul
Can you save any other widget?
Can you save the HTML widget with some simple HTML, like:
<a href="https://wordpress.org/">this is a link</a>Hi James,
I added the tet widget as above, it worked OK.
I add a new ‘Random Quotes’ widget, it wouldn’t save, so I guess it’s down to that indivdual widget?
Thanks
Paul
Hi James,
I added the extra widget as above, it worked OK.
I add a new ‘Random Quotes’ widget, it wouldn’t save, so I guess it’s down to that indivdual widget?
Thanks
Paul
