BuddyPress registration issue

A person with the name Jack Black registers and gets an email stating their username is jack-black, but their buddypress username (NOT their display name, their USERNAME) is jack.

The person now tries to login as jack-black and cannot. This creates major issues, particularly when running IP blocking plugins to prevent brute force attacks.
